Bring out the Bunting!

We love our bunting here at The Fairy Tale Fair! We can’t wait to show off the beautiful bunting by bunting boutique, which will decorate our fair once again!

Bunting Boutique's bunting at our spring fair

Bunting Boutique’s bunting at our spring fair

Here are a few words from Sue, owner of Bunting Boutique:

“Down on the Sunny South Coast, tucked away on a side street a mere stones-throw from the beach resides Bunting Boutique, makers of the most exquisite handmade one-off pieces of bunting.

Picture 193

In our Aladdins cave of a studio, surrounded by a myriad of fabrics, tools, nic-nacs and trinkets, we lovingly construct strand upon strand of bunting, the colour and fabric of every single piece carefully considered, every stitch laboured over.

Picture 192

Our vintage ranges are little works of art in their own right, and with materials sourced from all four corners of the globe (well, Sussex anyway!) you can guarantee that every bundle is totally unique.

Picture 195

By incorporating things like a crocheted doily, a gorgeous trim detail, or an area of hand embroidery, every piece has it’s own story, it’s own history, and we hope, a wonderful future!

If you’re looking for something specific, something more personal perhaps, then please click here to read more about the many bespoke services we can provide.

Picture 194

We can hand embroider letters onto linen to create words or phrases of your choice, or we can design and make Bunting to your specification.

Picture 196

You can choose the patterns, fabric and colour scheme of your choice to guarantee it fits perfectly wherever it ends up hanging.

Picture 198

If you have a special piece of vintage linen which is sentimental to you and would like to see it transformed into a lovely garland, we will gladly help you to realise this. So head over to our Bespoke page for more details.

A Festive Gift From…Claire Montgomery Design

Today we speak to Claire Montgomery Design, who is also our fair organiser. Find out more…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am an illustrator and designer based in Brighton. I specialise in hand crafted collage illustrations, and create unique and often surreal work with a personal touch. I make a range of items including greeting cards, badges, cotton bags, pocket mirrors and most recently jewellery. I take part in many craft fairs across Brighton and recently had a stall at Covent Garden, London. I work in a design studio in the week full time and create my crafty creations in my spare time. I am also organsier of The Fairy Tale Fair, so busy busy!

What festive creations will you be selling at The Fairy Tale fair?

I will be selling a range of Christmas and greeting cards, many of which are hand glittered. I also will be selling my jewellery range, with the launch of some new winter designs including Daisy the Deer and Fay the Fox! My jewellery is all hand designed and then laser cut from acrylic, mirror or wood. Each piece is unique, and I sell a range of items including necklaces, earrings, charms, phone charms, brooches and more. I will also be selling laser cut, hand decorated tree decorations, badges, pocket mirrors, cotton bags, small Christmas Stockings, prints and more! Lots of gifts and stocking fillers to be found for all ages!

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it and did you find your creations popular with visitors?

I did (as well as organising it!). I had a great day at the last Fairy Tale Fair, it was great seeing all the other stall holders wonderful creations and lots of people turn up to make it a success. It made all the hard work worth it! I am excited about our new bigger venue and even more talented stall holders! I am also looking forward to trying some yummy cake (if I get a spare minute) and see all our workshops in action. I might even get my face painted! I hope lots of people have noticed our flyers, had one through their door, picked one up and come along on the day. This week is a lot of work on the build up to the fair, with thousands of flyers being delivered door to door, blog posts, an e-shot, final preparations etc but I just can’t wait to the day is here! IT’S GOING TO BE MAGICAL!

Will you be taking part in any other events over the Christmas period?

Yes, lots! In fact my next day off is Christmas Eve! After The Fairy Tale Fair on Saturday you can find me at:

Say Hello To…Amy Strike

Today we say hello to Amy Strike who crafts the most beautiful creations from books. Her work is truly unique and we think rather well suited for our fair…

‘I enjoy the challenges of trying to do something new. Book art is a relatively new type of craft, and that means you can carve out some new territory while making things…’- Amy Strike

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I make things out of books. Books are great to build art work from because they are made out of all these different textures and surfaces: leather, and different kinds and colours of paper, and thread, and glue, and fonts. Sometimes I build from the theme of the book. For example, I am working on a commission for someone right now about Moby Dick from a beautiful hardback copy of Moby Dick itself, which means Ahab and the whale are built from the actual writing, and the best moments of the story. But I also love to make miniature books, and book jewellery. I think there are a lot of people out there who love books as much as I do.

How would you describe your style?

I often fold paper and craft fold out books, but most of all I love to create models and to build things. So I make a lot of ships out of books. I’ve made lighthouses and cities and kitchens and laboratories. It’s exciting to take a book and work out how you can build these things, how the underlying structure will work.

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been making book art for two years, ever since I finished studying English at Sussex University.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

People love book ships. It’s nice to imagine a book sailing away while you are trying to read it I think.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy the challenges of trying to do something new. Book art is a relatively new type of craft, and that means you can carve out some new territory while making things. It’s a rigorous practice but it’s also a grand experiment.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I work and exhibit my work at JAG gallery and open studios through the year, taking part in their open house in the Summer. I was lucky enough to be part of Brighton Dome’s House Open exhibition this year during Brighton Festival and won the Visitors Choice Award for my book art. I also take part in Art Junky at the Phoenix Gallery along with a range of other craft markets and exhibitions through the year.

What items and festive gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling a range of book art items, hopefully there will be something for everyone. I will be selling book jewellery (because one should always have something sensational to read on the train), a range of miniature pocket fairytale books, and lots of affordable books. There should be lots of familiar fairytales and stories, lots of cool book art things, and lots of great Christmas presents to snap up. There will be 10% off flyers on my website to print off nearer the time and some 20% off flyers to be won, so watch this space: www.amystrike.com and  Facebook.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

My plans for the future are to keep making book art, to an increasingly bizarre and exciting scale, and to keep hanging out in independent book shops (because independent book shops are cool), hatching grand schemes.

Find out more about Amy on her website and Facebook:
