Say Hello to Ribbon Real

Today we are happy to welcome another fairy tale fair newbie, Ribbon Real:

Tell us/ remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I’m Lynn Watt and I run Ribbonreal – home of beautiful  hand made vintage kimono silk homewares and accessories.

I make fabulous kimono cushions in hand painted and embroidered silks, but I make lots of other pretty things besides ; )

I come from a Fashion and Design background and have a passion for all things vintage and Japanese.

unnamed-39

How long have you been making your craft items?

I have been making kimono crafts for 4 years now – wow – time flies when you’re having fun! I needed to find an outlet for my creative self after giving up my job as an Art Director on a lifestyle magazine to become a full time mother of twins.

unnamed-40

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

This is a bit tricky as each of my cushions is a complete one off but I know that red cushions with either cranes or cherry blossoms always go from my shop really quickly and my geometric pattern cushions are very popular and on trend right now! Also, at fairs I sell kimono hairbands and these always sell like hot cakes!

unnamed-41

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I’ve always been inspired by the orient especially having lived so close to Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, and one day I just stumbled upon my kimono man-in-Japan on the internet! I was hooked on collecting kimono fabric from that day and I admit I’m a bit of a hoarder now! I am addicted! But I couldn’t believe how sad it was that kimonos were being un picked and sold off in strips. It’s amazing the art and craftsmanship that has gone into each kimono. So I wanted to make something out of the silk that could be equally special and beautiful and handed down for years to come. Each silk is so unique and special and it is such a beautiful medium to work with. I am so lucky going to my studio everyday to work with such beautiful cloth.

unnamed-42

Will you have some special Spring time Easter creations for sale?

I have lots of gorgeous seasonal cushions featuring butterflies, birds and florals. I also make flower soaps inspired by my love of the orient and I have made a very special little vintage bunny who will be carrying a kimono silk carrot! Nom nom.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I try to get out there as much as I can as my products are so tactile! I am a regular at Pop Up Vintage in Hassocks and am stocked at Brigden & Bayliss in Lewes aswell as the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne.

unnamed-43

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I am always inventing new ways with silk and my mind is always wandering and creating new things. Next on my list is to design my own fabric inspired by the amazing patterns I have discovered in kimono silks. But I need more spare time for this to happen!

Say Hello To…ANIMAGICAL : by Bex illustration

Today we are excited to welcome a newbie to the Fairy Tale Fair, Bex of Bex Illustration, who hand draws wonderful shrink plastic animal themed jewellery, which fit perfectly with our fair! We can’t wait to welcome her at her first craft fair!

Tell us/ remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I graduated from University of Portsmouth in 2012 and found myself stuck. I didn’t want a job, I wanted to be my own boss, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Just over a year later, I found my niche and started illustrating animal characters. After holding my first solo exhibition, I learnt how much people liked my characters. The jewellery making began when I shopped for jewellery I dreamt up, which didn’t exist, and decided I would have to make my own!

unnamed-28

My main material of choice is Shrink plastic. It is a way for me to illustrate many different types of characters, in detail, and using bright and bold colours, as well as trial new techniques. I have also recently been experimenting with silver and resin, but I am quite in love with my plastic characters at the moment so the rest is a hobby for now. Perhaps you will see some posh pieces in the near future. Follow my blog to be the first to see 

How long have you been making your craft items?

Around 6 months, although I only recently took the plunge and opened my shop on Etsy, just after Christmas.

unnamed-29

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

It is a draw at the moment between my guinea pig stud earrings and a cheeky gingerbread man riding a piñata (stripy rainbow horse). He was created initially as a novelty one off as I love both ginger bread men and piñatas, but the requests kept coming so I made more hehe.

unnamed-30

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

Bringing characters to life. I like to create pieces with personality, charisma and charm. I mainly create animals but give them human qualities. Watching them come to life is great but watching the effect they have on people that see them, wear them and share them is what making jewellery is all about for me. I have characters which are cheeky, shy, proud, angry, happy, mischievous and serious. I make jewellery we can all relate to.

unnamed-31

Will you have some special Spring time Easter creations for sale?

I will indeed. I have some sporty lambs, some musical chickens and even a special surprise creation!

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

Not yet, this is my very first, please come and say hello.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I would love to keep making jewellery, possibly get a few creations into shops and boutiques. I would also love to do more fairs and meet people who love, make and buy jewellery as well as people who love animals and there crazy ways.

SONY DSC

The first step is to be able to illustrate full time. I am currently working in a pet shop part time, and although I love my little animals, I want to try and live my dreams. Who doesn’t right? Then I can get a house by the seaside and have lots of pets and my own art studio. But now I am dreaming.

Describe what Easter means to you in 5 words or less

Treasure-hunts, hope, bunnies, great food

Any other comments you wish to make:

I like to think that when people where my jewellery, It makes them feel a certain way.

To create an initial talking point on a first date, at school or work or could it be the fact that the cheeky sloth necklace they are wearing represents them in some way. To send a message to the world that says hey… I am me and I am fab. I have designed characters which are cheeky, shy, proud, angry, happy, mischievous and serious. I make jewellery we can all relate to.

Say hello to……Lil Mommas of Hove

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am Originally from Bedfordshire but I grew up in the states. I live in Hove with my husband and two small children. I was taught to sew, knit and quilt by my father’s mother Ellen when I was a little girl. Her side of my family had ancestors on the Mayflower and were some of the first American settlers. The Family styles of crafting were passed on to me, and I still love to make interesting and challenging creations to this day.

1146578_372457996213153_283138817_n

I started Lil Mommas while on maternity leave last year and am new to the craft fair circuit. My wares reflect my life; bright, kid friendly, and whimsical. Every design that I display in my stalls was originally tested, tried out and loved by my own children, then hand produced for these fairs. My designs include children quilts, costumes, bags, soft toys and other furnishings for the family home.

How long have you been making your craft items?

Privately, for over 20 years. I began my business in January of 2012.

I hope to continue to build my business, and expand to more craft fairs in the area.

Say Hello To… Noelle Vaughn

Please introduce yourself…
I’m Noelle Vaughn, a vintage singer and Jazz Chanteuse specialising in jazz standards and vintage classics from the 1940’s – 1960’s. I also have my own vintage radio show on Ridge Radio, every Monday evening from 9-11pm on www.ridgeradio.co.uk.
1470085_550911401649738_1084792712_n
Have you been singing for a long time?
Ever since I was little, but I remember being 7 or 8 when I started singing to vintage music.
What do you enjoy most about it?
It’s hard to put into words – I adore music and come from a very musical household. I grew up surrounded by it, so it’s part of my life and I enjoy singing because music is so moving. But I can honestly say that one of the things I enjoy most about it is the pleasure it gives others; that is so touching.
What are your plans/ ambitions for the future, or have you already achieved them?
So far, 2013 has been fantastic – I have performed at some amazing venues, met brilliant people along the way, and just released my album, Bewitched. I am looking forward to seeing what 2014 holds!
Are you looking forward to singing at The Fairy Tale Fair on Saturday?
Very much so, and so are many others who have said they’ll be coming along! The tea room sounds lovely!

Say hello to… Woah there Pickle

As we near ever closer to the fair today we introduce to you another fairy tale fair newbie- Vicky of Woah there Pickle, and her fab lino cuts which we love! Find out all about them, and her of course…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

My name is Vicky and I’m a printmaker based by the seaside in Brighton. I specialise in linocut prints and cards of bits and bobs like robots and dinosaurs, with an occasional bit of foiling thrown in because who doesn’t like something shiny!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.15.31

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been printmaking for about 4 years now and can’t get enough of it.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

Of course 🙂 My best selling prints are the Monster Hand and my rendition of Salvador Dali’s Lobster Phone. I have also got a range of different Christmas card designs including Elfis who is new for this year and going down a storm.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.15.40

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

It’s magic! On the base of it, it could not be more simple. All you do is carve a design into lino, ink it up and print it to paper, but how ever long you’ve been doing it you still don’t know how its going to look when it’s printed so you are constantly surprised and then no two prints are exactly the same.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I sure do, I’ll be at Craftaganza, Art Junkie and Makers Boutique this Christmas. I’m also in the pop up exhibition at the Fishing Quarter Gallery in Brighton until the 21st Dec.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

The studio that I work in has some amazing screen printing equipment so next year I’m hoping to get my grubby mitts on that and do some more printing on fabric.

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

I’m really excited to be selling at the Fairytale Fair this year, It’s going to make for a magical Christmas for sure!

Remind us about you and what you create?

My love of the twenties fashion and culture first inspired me to make the original Polite Friends Rings. Yes, it was amazing and spectacular. So many talented people under one roof! It truly was magical, there was a great atmosphere with a creative workshop room, a tearoom and a clown making funny shaped bracelets out of balloons!  I met some really lovely customers and stallholders, and even won a prize in the raffle.

Picture 475

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’d like Retro Violet to keep growing, last year I was just doing stalls but this year I also have a pop-up shop in Gorgeous Gerties, Dorking. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Next year I’m hoping to develop my online shop too.

Say a Festive Hello To…Show Me Shiny Things

Today we are pleased to welcome back fliss of Show Me Shiny Things, who you can find in our workshop room, surrounded by lots of lovely beads!! Find out more…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hi, I’m Fliss. I live in Hove and I work in mental health services. I’m studying to hopefully be a psychotherapist one day. I like to entertain myself with yoga, skating by the sea, and making jewellery and accessories… it gives me a great excuse to collect lots and lots of shiny things!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.22

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been making jewellery for just over a year now.  I was inspired to have a go after a friend made me a memory wire bracelet.  It was a great way to make use of my half forgotten collection of beads!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

Necklaces are my best sellers; the silver chain with the little ‘two birds on a branch’ pendant and my newer range of coloured glass pendants on black lace.  For Christmas I’ve been making some special festive earrings and giant pins, with snowflakes, holly and candy cane silver charms. I’m also adding a collection of shiny things for boys, so perfect stocking fillers for everybody!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.30

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love seeing my range of jewellery getting bigger and better, and designing the craft fair displays. It’s great fun to set it up and show lots of people what I’ve been making.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

Yes, during this past year I’ve attended a few craft fairs in Brighton & Hove (Brighton Craft Fair, Brighton Craft Alliance), Worthing (Bartie’s Boutique) & London (Brighton Belle’s at Old Spitalfields Market). I’ve also had jewellery on display at the lovely ‘Sunshine Books, Art & Coffee’ cafe on Hove Street since the May Open Houses. This will be my third Fairy Tale Fair, very excited!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.38

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’m planning to do some work on photography and online sales in 2014. I want to set up my etsy shop, keep working on my facebook page and I would love to get some items on ‘not on the high street’. As well as continuing to get to craft fairs and markets!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

It’s always excellent fun being part of the Fairy Tale Fair, and especially running the jewellery workshop making bracelets with kids. None of this would be possible without Claire’s hard work, so a big thank you! Here’s to a magical fairy tale Christmas fair!!
