Artists Open Houses Brighton

The Artists Open Houses as part of Brighton festival are in full swing, and this weekend will be the third weekend of four, so if you haven’t yet visited the houses then time is running out!

The artists houses provide a unique opportunity to meet the artists behind the art and have a nosey round their houses at the same time.

A few of our previous stall holders and fair organiser can be found in some of the houses too. We recommend:

The Cake House, 37 Cleveland Road, Fiveways (opposite Blakers Park). 11am-5pm.
– full of cute crafts, art, jewellery, vintage finds and of course wonderful cake!
Find previous Fairy Tale Fair stall holders Cat-a-Cake Creations, Amie Boswell, Clair Letton and Fiona Edwards in this house!

A Festive Gift From…TheBigForest

Today we welcome back TheBigForest! TheBigForest and their amazing artists bears took part in our last Fairy Tale Fair and their creations were certainly popular with our visitors, with some of them even commissioning TheBigForest for their own personal bears! TheBigForest will also be the subject of Craftaganza Live this Wednesday, at The Old Market Hove, 7pm, where they will be talking about their success as a designer & blogger team and how to go about it yourself.

“We LOVED the last Fairy Tale Fair. Not only did our goods dash off to nice homes on the day but we also were delighted to receive lots of commissions from people who met us at the event.”- TheBigForest

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

In a sunny forest clearing stands a hut, TheBigForest hut. Benjamin, Maker in Chief, spends the day designing wondrous handmade goods to delight and thrill.

There are always new goods in TheBigForest inspired by the trees and woods, the changing seasons…..and bears! Look out for our unique handmade Artist and Heirloom bears – they look wonderful perched on a shelf or box framed in mid-century modern and traditional interiors. We also make quirky greetings cards, felt brooches, kids name door hangers and wonderful forest inspired prints.

What festive gifts and creations will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

We will be selling all sorts of Christmas gifts from our animal bag charms which make great stocking fillers to our larger character bears which make a stunning gift. Maybe you will see Mod Bear scooting round the forest on his Lambretta or Warhol the Artist Bear? Father Christmas Bear will also be making an appearance (if we can get him away from the mince pieces and mulled wine!).

You took part in our last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it and did you find your creations were popular with visitors?

We LOVED the last Fairy Tale Fair. Not only did our goods dash off to nice homes on the day but we also were delighted to receive lots of commissions from people who met us at the event. Some commissions were for an Autobearography (a bear that has badges and a special item evoking the owner’s life story) …… and ………well the other commissions were superfantastic too but we are not allowed to say as many of them were ordered as Christmas presents!

Will you be taking part in other events over the festive period (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

We are indeed; we will be taking part in fairs in both London and Brighton. And our goods have just become available on notonthehighstreet.com/thebigforest, we have designed and made a special collection for in a wonderful new shop, Serenissime in Lyon, France and in selected high quality retailers in London.

Find out more: Blog: thebigforestuk.workpress.com or follow TheBigForest on twitter @thebigforestuk

We can’t wait to see all the new Christmas bears at the fair, and don’t forget you can see them at the Craftaganza live talk this Wednesday- details on their Facebook page via the link above!

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….
I am a Brighton based artist and maker. I paint colourful, fairy tale landscapes and make cakes, among other things.

How would you describe your style?
I am inspired by colour and love the work of artists like Paul Klee and Mark Rothko.

How long have you been in business?
I have been working as an artist since I left university as a mature student 10 years ago.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
I love spending time in my studio painting and I spend a long time mixing my paints to get the exact tones and shades that I want.

Do you take part in other events?
I open my house in fiveways during the brighton festival in May, and in the run up to christmas. We open as “The Cake House” and showcase the work of local artists and makers.

What products/ items will you be displaying at The Fairy Tale Fair?
I will be bringing lovely cards, cake stands and colourful bangles.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?
I would like to get in to children’s book illustration one day, and own a lovely tea shop to justify all my cake baking!
