A Festive Welcome Back to….. Ilona’s Kitschen

Remind us about about you and what you create?

I work part time as a teacher of Science in a pupil referral unit in the city and make polymer clay charms. I have now added some resin charms to my collection.

Will you be selling some special festive creations?

I have some limited edition festive charms available, some resin Christmas decorations and some festive earrings. As it is the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who I will also have some Doctor Who pieces.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

No. The Fairy Tale Fair is my craft fair of choice.

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

I love doing the Fairy tale Fair, the atmosphere is always great and I have met some lovely people.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I went part time this September, which allows me to spend more time making things. So far on my day off I have been making festive bits and pieces and I have to say it is a great way to spend a day. It would be lovely to do this full-time but at the moment I really enjoy teaching Science, especially in such a challenging environment.

No, we will be making special festive creations! My felt making workshop will involve “Felting a Christmas Bauble” Using a plastic ball as a base, we will wrap it in wool, add our festive character …. or pretty pink rabbits (or anti festive spiders or black cats) and rub with soap and water, then voila! We have created handmade felt. It’s always great fun, suitable for all ages. Maybe this time Mums and Dads, let the kids have a go!!!

Every now and then something surprising happens that takes me in a new direction. I find that exciting – not knowing what great things the future holds. I’m enjoying holding felt making workshops, I’m holding an after school club at the moment and one day I’ll hold regular adult classes ….

A Magical Day at The Fairy Tale Fair…

Well what a day we had yesterday- lots of lovely customers through the door who braved the miserable weather to step inside and brighten up their day at The Fairy Tale Fair! Thanks to all those who visited and came away with some lovely handmade gifts and took part in our workshops (which we certainly popular!). We heard such nice comments about the fair, the atmosphere and the quality of the talented stall holders work. Many people also commented on how nice it was to have a local event and not have to worry about paying for parking and go into town.

Our craft workshops were very popular with lots of children sat around every table- what better to do with the kids on a rainy weekend then to make some wonderful crafts and learn a new skill! Thanks to all the stall holders who turned up with such wonderful creations and made the day so magical!

Thanks to these 3 ladies- The Close Shaves, who came along and sang wonderful vintage and festive tunes in our tearoom. Also a special thanks to Mayflower Events for doing the tearoom for us- they made some super yummy cupcakes, gingerbread men, mince pies, pastries and more! Got some lovely comments about the festive themed cakes as well and how lovely it was to have it served on vintage china and drink out of a proper teacup!

Sparkles face painting was again a huge hit with continuous queues throughout the day, and again ‘the best face painting we’ve ever seen’! Powder beauty and their fab penguin and snowman nail art also were very popular, and we heard some great comments about Sweet Dreams Candy Cart in the entrance.

All in all it was a magical day in Patcham! We will be back in Spring so please visit us again! We hope you all enjoyed the day and we’d love to know your comments about the fair! Our photographers will have some proper photos coming soon- these a just a few quick snaps from yesterday.

Say Hello To…Patricia Palmer

In our latest interview we say hello to Patricia Palmer. Although Patricia has many years experience in textiles having taught it at Patcham High School, The Fairy Tale Fair is her first craft fair! She is a little nervous as to what people will make of her work but we know people will love her creations! Read on to find out more about her…

“I still get a real kick from pulling lots of little bits and pieces together and making something pretty but useable…”– Patricia Palmer

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I taught Textile Art for many years at the local Secondary School and loved to incorporate hand and machine embroidery, beading, fabric printing, knitting and patchwork into my lessons whenever I could.

How would you describe your style?

I prefer to work small and use eye catching coloured fabrics, embroidery, beads and sequins. Everything I make has to have a practical use as well as looking glitzy or pretty or both!

How long have you been making your craft items?

Even after taking early retirement a couple of years ago the urge to sew continued so I started to make items for friends and as gifts. Then I visited the” Fairy Tale Fair” and here I am!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

Not yet, but I hope too – possibly the Lady Gaga Peg Dolls or the Fabric Pin Badges or maybe the Knitted Cacti!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I still get a real kick from pulling lots of little bits and pieces together and making something pretty but useable – it’s so relaxing but rewarding at the same time. You can’t beat it!

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

No this is my first. I am a craft fair virgin.

What items and festive gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

Fabric Christmas Tree Decorations that drip with beads, sequins and golden threads, Children’s Fabric Animals Badges which are padded and embroidered with little faces, Crazy Peg Dollies which look like something between a fairy and Lady Gaga and Book Worms for their stockings, Embellished Needle Cases, Patchwork Pin Cushions and a large range of Knitted Cacti for the ladies and gents.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I hope people like my work as I would be happy to do more and share my skills with others.

Any other comments you wish to make:

I am looking forward to the Fair but also feel a little anxious as to how my work will be received – only time will tell!

Over 10,000 views!

Our blog has now had over 10,000 views! That is amazing and more then we would of ever hoped for! Thanks for everyones continued interest in the fair, and we hope that many of you can visit our next fair on Saturday the 24th November! It’s going to be magical!

In the Press!

After the success of our 1st fair in August this year we are back for a festive special this winter (if you haven’t already heard)! Next fair is Saturday 24th November 2012- save the date, its going to be magical! For more information visit the About page.

We are in the process of designing new flyers, posters etc. This is an ad just sent of to Nostalgic Union magazine for their November edition! We also sent an ad off to Inside Magazine yesterday- so hopefully you might see us around!

We can’t wait for our next fair- we have a new bigger venue and even more crafty stall holders this time! As well as a vintage tearoom with festive treats and a workshop room with a range of craft workshops for all ages! Hope to see you there! A full updated list of stall holders will be up soon!
