Bring out the Bunting!

We love our bunting here at The Fairy Tale Fair! We can’t wait to show off the beautiful bunting by bunting boutique, which will decorate our fair once again!

Here are a few words from Sue, owner of Bunting Boutique:

“Down on the Sunny South Coast, tucked away on a side street a mere stones-throw from the beach resides Bunting Boutique, makers of the most exquisite handmade one-off pieces of bunting.

Picture 193

In our Aladdins cave of a studio, surrounded by a myriad of fabrics, tools, nic-nacs and trinkets, we lovingly construct strand upon strand of bunting, the colour and fabric of every single piece carefully considered, every stitch laboured over.

Picture 192

Our vintage ranges are little works of art in their own right, and with materials sourced from all four corners of the globe (well, Sussex anyway!) you can guarantee that every bundle is totally unique.

Picture 195

By incorporating things like a crocheted doily, a gorgeous trim detail, or an area of hand embroidery, every piece has it’s own story, it’s own history, and we hope, a wonderful future!

If you’re looking for something specific, something more personal perhaps, then please click here to read more about the many bespoke services we can provide.

Picture 194

We can hand embroider letters onto linen to create words or phrases of your choice, or we can design and make Bunting to your specification.

Picture 196

You can choose the patterns, fabric and colour scheme of your choice to guarantee it fits perfectly wherever it ends up hanging.

If you have a special piece of vintage linen which is sentimental to you and would like to see it transformed into a lovely garland, we will gladly help you to realise this. So head over to our Bespoke page for more details.

Say Hello To… Trish Palmer

Today we welcome back Trish Palmer- her knitted cati were very popular at the last fair, in fact we are still getting messages about them now! They will be back for summer along with lots of other lovely creations…

“It’s fabulous to be with craft lovers – sellers and buyers, plus cake and tea. What’s not to love?” – Trish Palmer

544316_442845235789689_1935200542_n

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I taught Textiles at the local secondary school for over 30 years. During those years I taught students how to hand sew and use a sewing machine. I also promoted embroidery, knitting, quilting, French knitting, tie/dye and patchwork within the lessons or short courses at the end of terms. Now I have retired I am enjoying experimenting with different crafts and combining them in different ways.

Picture 149

How would you describe your style?

I like to work quite small but always take care to make everything detailed. I love colour, decoration and embroidery. My creations, I hope, show lots of skill but are still practical. I always try to incorporate a little something to make you smile.

Picture 150

How long have you been making your craft items?

I have always made bits and pieces for friends and relatives but have only sold my items for the last year or so.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My knitted cacti seem very popular as they look real but are not vicious and you cannot kill them – practical but fun. People like my Super Star peg dollies as they are very detailed with lots of ribbon, lace and glitz – modeled on Lady Gaga. I have made up some kits for the next fair so everyone can make their own individual Super Star.

Picture 148

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I never make exactly the same thing twice. Everything is different from the last one. So I still get a kick when I find a new pot for a cacti or a really nice piece of fabric for a peg dolly. I love trying new ideas.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I only work with The Fairy Fair and have been lucky enough to have done 3 fairs to date. I am really looking forward to the Fairy Fairs 1st birthday fair.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I enjoy crafting and if people continue to like my work I will continue to sell. If not, then my friends and relatives will receive more gifts! I cannot imagine not doing some sort of craft work. I am painting a farm yard mural for my new granddaughter at the moment!

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

It’s fabulous to be with craft lovers – sellers and buyers, plus cake and tea. What’s not to love?

Any other comments you wish to make:

I cannot praise Claire enough for her professional but friendly organization of the Fairy Fair. It always looks fantastic.

Say Hello to… Pomelo Crafts

Today we catch up with Lynn of Pomelo crafts who has taken part in all of our Fairy Tale Fairs. Find out more about her lovely creations…

Picture 143

Hello, I’m Lynn from Pomelo Crafts. I live in Brighton with my family and sewing is my favourite thing to do in my spare time. I love to make different types of bags and purses – make-up bags, toiletry bags, coin purses, phone cases, kindle cases, iPad sleeves…… and this is exactly the type of items I will be bringing with me to the Fairy Tale Fair.

Picture 144

I have a serious addiction to fabric and this is my way to fund the habit! I love mixing and matching different material together to make unique items which are also very useful. Pretty much everything I make is born out of a personal need so all the different products are tried and tested…. (although I’m still waiting for someone to buy me an iPad so I can make a pretty case for it).

Picture 145

I’ve taken part in all 3 Fairy Tale Fairs and I have absolutely loved them all. There’s such a lovely atmosphere and so many wonderful things to see and do. My daughter LOVES it and is always one of the first in the queue to get her face painted. I can’t wait!

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I have always enjoyed being creative, and studied an art foundation 14 yrs ago which really enabled me to look at art differently. But it’s since having my children that I have combined my artistic side with more useful designs. I started out making gifts and everyday items for my children and friends and am starting to develop this into a business creating gifts and keepsakes that can be used, loved and produce a smile. I make various items, some of my favorites being my Book Bugs and keep calm bags. Some like my blankets are commissioned but as I visit more fairs I’m creating a small stock of unique and useful items like Poop bugs and seasonal wears.

Say Hello To…The Cotton Elephant

We first met The Cotton Elephant at our first Fairy Tale Fair, she returned for Christmas and we are lucky enough to have her back again for Spring too! Find out more…

“I would like to live in a cottage, with a herd of micro-pigs and some chickens and spend my time split between my sewing room and my allotment! In the meantime though, I’m quite happy to just spend a few hours a week with a needle and thread.”– Siobhan, The Cotton Elephant.

cotton elephant sewn gifts

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am the Cotton Elephant and I make gifts, home wares and pretty things from fabric. There’s no theme to my creations as such; they’re just whatever pops into my head. I particularly enjoy making patchwork quilts for babies, but I also like making smaller items such as cushions and decorations (including, of course, little Cotton Elephants). For the next Fairy Tale Fair I am working on a new range of Mothers’ day gifts including jewellery wraps and purses, which I will be selling alongside some old favourites such as my beach-hut door stops and applique cushions.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My personalized baby blankets have been selling really well this year (something to do with the baby boom I think!) and that’s great because I get lovely pictures sent to me of super-cute babies enjoying tummy time on my creations! Items from my seaside range also sell well; I have sold some of my beach-huts as far as the USA.

il_570xN.410823180_sa8l

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I have a busy and quite demanding day job which involves me spending most of my time in front of a computer. I really love being able to unwind in front of the sewing machine, or sitting with a cuppa and hand-sewing the final touches to a new creation. Sewing gives me the chance to be creative, which I wouldn’t really have otherwise.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have done two other Fairy Tale Fairs – they’re absolutely brilliant! I hope to do more fairs this year.

il_570xN.410817519_lf46

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I’m making a range of products with some fab new silk fabric I have found; purses, make up bags and jewellery wraps which will make lovely gifts for mums. I’m also selling a range of smaller items which will make lovely little gifts.

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

I loved it! Meeting so many other crafters and lovely members of the public was absolutely great. It was also really festive – and I LOVE Christmas!

il_570xN.407787898_hvje

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I would like to live in a cottage, with a herd of micro-pigs and some chickens and spend my time split between my sewing room and my allotment! In the meantime though, I’m quite happy to just spend a few hours a week with a needle and thread.

We look forward to having her again on Saturday the 9th March- it’s going to be magical!

Say Hello To…Vera Jane

Say Hello To Lucy of Vera Jane. Lucy is pretty new to the craft fair scene but we think her creations will go down wonderfully, especially for our Fairy Tale Fair- we have our eye on one of her beautiful teddy bears!

“I’d like to imagine all my items in this sort of fairy-tale forest imagination land where you can eat the trees and the clouds are candyfloss!”– Lucy, Vera Jane

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hello! My name is Lucy I’m a very enthusiastic seamstress and the maker behind Vera Jane. I mostly make one of a kind item’s from lovely materials such as imported Japanese fabrics, vintage pass me downs and other cute finds I’ve been collecting for a while now!

How would you describe your style?

Some words I would use to describe it are – whimsical, sickly sweet, magical, cute! I think it’s a sort of fantasy style… Think of dreams you have when you are young or the magical stories you get told…I’d like to imagine all my items in this sort of fairy-tale forest imagination land where you can eat the trees and the clouds are candyfloss!

How long have you been making your craft items?

I have been sewing on and off for a good few years but started Vera Jane recently which is named after my lovely Nana who was also a seamstress. She always encouraged my creativity and gave me some good advice along with her button tin 🙂 So it felt very appropriate and inspiring to name this after her!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

Not yet! There seems to be a lot of love for the Teddy Bears and more recently the Alice in Wonderland Skirt made from amazing Fabric by Kokka!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I do enjoy each stage in its own way but the creative part is definitely a great bit… This is where I choose the fabrics and decide what to make from it… Then experimenting with different colour combinations and other materials is really exciting to me! Although I can spend ages doing this so maybe not the most productive! It’s also such a nice feeling when people appreciate your work and love their item 🙂

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

My first fair was with my sister in Alton but it was a rainy day and not many people showed up. Other than that I did the Brighton craft fair at the friends meeting house in June which was lovely but I still feel pretty new to it all!

What items and festive gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling a range of mostly one of a kind items including – Home wares and Teddy’s and also accessories and a few things to wear. They are a combination of festive colours and my usual brightly coloured treasures.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I have lots of plans and ambitions for the future! I’ve had a colourful start and would like to continue improving my skills and also learn new ones. I plan to work on new collections and make more wearable pieces. I also hope to have a website next year where I can showcase my work and also have online shopping there too.

Any other comments you wish to make:

Thanks for having me at the fair, I am very excited!

We look forward to welcoming Lucy and her beautiful creations on the 24th! Find out more on her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/verajanes. Also view her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/VeraJanes
