Picture 351

People’s Day is a community event to celebrate the diverse communities that make up Brighton & Hove. For the first time, City College Brighton & Hove is proud to be hosting the new Country Fayre Zone at their Pelham Street campus in the popular North Laine area just off Trafalgar Street. Say Hello To…Gifts By Gemma-Louise

Today we meet a Fairy Tale Fair newbie, Gemma. Gemma designs the most beautiful patterns and translates them into wonderful gifts and homeware. Find out more…

“I love seeing my drawings evolve into beautiful designs then creating them into products for people to then like themselves and want to buy my gifts! “– Gemma

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

My names Gemma and Im the creator of Gifts By Gemma-Louise. I’ve always been a crafter and studied a BA(Hons) in Surface and Textile Design finishing it two years ago, this is where my love of craft and handmade textiles came to life. Having wanted to turn my love and passion for my work into something more than a hobby, I set up Gifts By Gemma-Louise in January 2013, so its still very much in the early stages but I’m loving every minute of it! My work is made from eye catching floral designs created from original artwork drawn by myself then made into giftware products for all occasions, this is what makes my work unique as all the floral fabrics and papers I use are all my own designs so you wont get them anywhere else.

Picture 273

How would you describe your style?

I take my inspiration from flowers, I’m drawn in by their shapes, colours, textures and I love the details they have. I would say my work has a stylised look with striking patterns while using fresh colours.

How long have you been making your craft items?

The fabric and paper designs I have been creating over many years, Im always drawing and playing around with designs in photoshop but I started making my products in January 2013 when Gifts By Gemma-Louise started.

Picture 269

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

So far my greetings cards have been my biggest seller with lavender scented bags and brooches not far behind.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love seeing my drawings evolve into beautiful designs then creating them into products for people to then like themselves and want to buy my gifts!

Picture 271

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

So far Gifts By Gemma-Louise has held stalls at two craft fairs in Sussex and have another three booked in up till April.

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling a range of greeting cards including mother day cards, there will be coasters, cushions, bunting, hair clips, hanging plaques, decorated wooden letters…. there will also be brooches and lavender scented hanging hearts which make lovely handmade gifts for mothers day.

Picture 272

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’ve got lots of plans for new designs and products but as its still a very new venture I’m focusing on getting products made for the craft fairs I have booked and will see what happens from there.

Say Hello To… Georgie Arts

We last met Georgie Arts at our Christmas Fairy Tale Fair, and we are lucky enough to have them back again. Find out more about her and her beautiful whimsical embroidered creations…

“What can be better than stitching, beading and embellishing all day and then sending your creations off to make someone’s day?”- Tina, Georgie Arts

Picture 262

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….
Georgie Arts makes all things embroidered and embellished; occasion bags, notebooks, cards and scrumptious little gifts.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?
It varies by season. Currently the wedding season is hotting up and so occasion bags for bridesmaids and Mother of the Bride are hot, but always, cards and notebooks are favourites.

Picture 261

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
What can be better than stitching, beading and embellishing all day and then sending your creations off to make someone’s day?

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?
Sometimes. Our treasures take a long time to make so we don’t attend many fairs. This spring we will be at Brighton Craft Fair at the Friends Centre on March 30th and we are also taking our Bridals collection of tiaras, head pieces, bags and favours to Belles Bridal Bazaar in New Road in April.

Picture 260

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?
We will have some beautiful embroidered Mother’s Day cards and our little fairy pomanders, heart keychains and notebooks make great gifts for Mothers. If you are trying to keep down your chocolate consumption, all our goodies will make great Easter gifts. Our bee and front notebooks have more than a hint of spring. We’ll also bring our Fairytale Fair special ‘Toadstool sitter’ and ‘Once Upon a time’ cards.

Picture 258

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?
We loved every minute. It was very busy and lovely and Christmassy. It was great to meet up with the other friendly stall holders and all our customers.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?
This year, in partnership with The Silver Hut, Georgie bridals is launching co-ordinated collections and that is keeping us both busy. Between us we hope soon to have the whole world beaded and embellished! A bit ambitious perhaps, but Brighton at least.

Say Hello To…Lubilou

Today we say hello to Lisa, of Lubilou who makes the most cute & quirky ceramics we’ve come across…

“When I am in my studio its like I have entered another little world where I am not thinking or stressing about daily life.” – Lisa

My name is Lisa. My Dad calls me Lubi and my Mum calls me Lou, thats where I got my name Lubilou from.

I play with clay most Sundays, I like to make sheep and other things.

How would you describe your Style?
My style is individual, textured and quirky. I want to make people smile.

How long?
I’ve been playing with clay for about 3 years and Lubilou came about just under a year ago.

Picture 263

Best seller?
My brooches seem to be my most popular item. They come in hearts and butterflies in a variety of colours and are all unique due to the different textures that I use.

Enjoy most?
Clay is great to work with, I love the feel of wet clay in my hands. When I am in my studio its like I have entered another little world where I am not thinking or stressing about daily life. I also love adding texture, character and personality to my sheep. I tickle myself when I think up their names and likes.

Picture 265

Other events?
I took part in my first craft fair last year and since then have done 3 with Makers Boutique who I will be joining at the Brighton Fishing Quarter in March for 6 weeks.

Picture 266

Mothers Day?
I think that my sheep can appeal to lots of people including Mum’s. Mothers Day is all about saying thanks and showing love, I have heart brooches and pretty decorative hanging hearts and butterflies that are great to give and make pretty affordable gifts.

Picture 264

Ambitions / plans
One of my goals for this year was to do another craft fair so I am excited and delighted to be taking part in the Fairy Tale craft fair.
My plan is to get organised and to keep my stock levels up so that I can keep my folksy shop in stock and be able to take part in more craft fairs and events.
My ambition feels like a dream, it would be to spend more time making and creating and for Lubilou to become more than a hobbie.

Say Hello To…Cat-a-Cake Creations

Today we hear from our fair organiser, Claire Montgomery. Claire will also have a stall at the fair and will be selling under the name of Cat-a-Cake Creations. Find out a bit more about her…

“Visitors to our fair seem to stay for hours, looking at the wonderful crafts, eating yummy cake, listening to our vintage singers, helping their children take part in a workshop, getting their faces painted and much more- it really was a magical day!”– Claire

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

As well as organising this fair and working full time at a design studio, I also regularly sell at craft markets across Sussex. I sell a range of whimsical & animal themed laser cut jewellery, greetings cards, pocket mirrors, badges, cotton bags and more! All of my work is hand designed by myself. I have recently re-branded under the name of Cat-a-Cake Creations, in line with my new website and Etsy store.

cat-a-cake creations jewellery

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My ‘Buddy the Cat’ necklace is always popular. He is based on my own pet Buddy the cat, who is a big fluffy black cat who likes lots of cuddles! The best thing about having him as a necklace is he can be any colour I want him to be! Other than Buddy then my earrings are always popular- at two pairs for £7 they are very good value and come in various cute animals, colours and all have silver plated findings and come in a little pouch to keep them warm!

pink cat necklace

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy translating a design that starts in my head, to a sketch, then to a visual, then to a piece of jewellery, then selling it, seeing peoples reactions and hearing their feedback on it is always good. It’s a great feeling to see someone wearing a piece of your jewellery- its nice to know that it is appreciated. I recently sold an item from my Etsy shop to a lady in America, so Dot the Dalmatian necklace was wrapped up and sent off to sunny Florida- alright for some! I think Etsy is great to get your work known further afield and its a great feeling knowing a little item you had an idea about is now sitting as a lovely necklace in a house half way around the world!

Picture 244

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

Yes, lots! As well as The Fairy Tale Fair I also take part in Brighton Craftaganza, Makers Boutique and two Artists Open Houses in May and December each year. This May I will again be part of The Cake House, which is a lovely child friendly houses with lot of cute arts and crafts (and rainbow stairs), as well as a new house- The Dog House which is a great well established house with over 16 artists- find out more about them on my website. I’ll also be taking part in more craft fairs and local events during the summer.

Picture 245

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling a range of cute gift ideas for both Mother’s day and Easter. These include greeting cards- my dotty chick card won a Pinterest competition last year and is very popular! Also I have made some special little felt chicks that come in their own little pouches to keep warm. They want to be your friend so please say hello on the day! There is only 3 available- so be quick! Also I will have badges, pocket mirror, earrings, necklaces and much more to choose from.

Picture 246

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

Yes I took part, and organised it! As with the summer fair it was great to see it all come together on the day and see the happy faces of the children and customers who visited! It takes a lot of work to get the crowd in we did- thousands of flyers through doors, adverts, lots of posts on this blog, keeping up with social accounts, sending emails, contacting press and much more- but I think it is all worth it in the end. It rained hard ALL day for the Christmas fair but that didn’t seem to put visitors off- there was a steady flow of people all day and it was particularly busy in the morning. Visitors seem to stay for hours, looking at the wonderful crafts, eating yummy cake, listening to our vintage singers, helping their children take part in a workshop, getting their faces painted and much more- it really was a magical day! I hope this Spring fair will be just as magical, we have so much to offer so please don’t miss it!

Picture 238

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I hope to continue to organise The Fairy Tale Fair, and help it grow. I have plans to make it bigger and expand, but I’d always like to keep its local roots as it has a real community feel! I’d also like to organise more events, such as charity events, weddings and other fairs/ markets across Sussex.

I’d also like to continue to develop my design career and one day aim to have my own greeting card range and exhibit at a big trade show in London. I also have a keen interest in Children’s books. For my final project when I was at university I created a book of nursery rhymes- I’d like to continue to develop this and one day write my own children’s book too! Oh and I’d like to own a cute little cake and craft shop in Brighton by the seaside- everything would sparkle and be lovely!

Say Hello To…Owl and Otter

We first met The Owl & Otter at our last Fairy Tale Fair, and we are lucky enough to have them and their wonderful laser cut creations back again.

“We’ve taken part in the last two Fairy Tale Fairs and they have been brilliant. We’ve met some lovely customers, made friends with wonderful crafters and eaten some gorgeous cake…”– Rachael, Owl & Otter

Picture 219

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

My name is Rachael and I’m the face behind the Owl & Otter, which is based in the sunny seaside town of Brighton. The Owl & Otter started on my living room floor when I was making favors/table decorations for my wedding. We had a very tight budget but we wanted to have all our friends and family around us so I set to work. It was a lot of hardwork, especially fitting it around my work, but I got there and it was a fantastic day overall! The wedding showed me that I loved creating beautiful presents and decorations and from that day on, I have set about making products that I would want in my own home and in July 2012, the Owl & Otter was created.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

Our best seller by far, is our lovely jewellery tree. It features the Owl & Otter’s little feathered friends and its absolutely brilliant for storing earrings, bracelets and necklaces. This product started life as a solution to my jewellery storage needs! Its lovely to think that other people, around the world, who also have a jewellery tree that I designed on their dressing table.

Picture 218

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

There are many things I love about my business. I love being creative and working with clients to ensure they get the perfect product. I have been self employed for nearly 2 years and its been a fantastic experience. Its taught me a lot about myself and given me the flexibility to pursue new crafts and ideas. Its a lot of work and its not uncommon for me to finish orders late at night but its worth it.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

At the moment, The Owl & Otter is only going to attend The Fairy Tale Fair but we do have big plans for the future so watch this space!

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

We’ve got some cracking products to sell at The Fairy Tale Fair, which we hope people will like. We have recently created a range of felt coasters, which are perfect as a Mother’s Day present. We’ve also just designed a new clock using cherrywood and acrylic and a XL jewellery tree, perfect for necklaces and larger pieces of jewellery, which we shall also be selling in March. We are also excited to have our eco-friendly ready to paint Easter decorations, perfect for children to paint over the holidays.

Picture 217

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

We’ve taken part in the last two Fairy Tale Fairs and they have been brilliant. We’ve met some lovely customers, made friends with wonderful crafters and eaten some gorgeous cake! Each fair has had a great array of people, from children to grandparents, and has been superbly promoted by Claire. I have been looking forward to the next Fairy Tale Fair since, December!

Picture 216

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

We’ve got a number of plans for the future. I want to continue expanding the Owl & Otter range and continue to offer quality products which are finished to the highest standard. I’m looking forward to making new clocks, photo frames and mirrors. In the meantime, I am concentrating on getting the stock ready for March!

Picture 215

Any other comments you wish to make:
If you’re wondering why we’re called the Owl & Otter, its basically because my husband’s nickname is nightowl and my favorite animal is an otter. While some people have doves at their wedding, we had owls (see cheesy photo)

Say Hello To…Trish Palmer

We first met Trish Palmer at our last Fairy Tale Fair, and we are lucky enough to have her back again.

“I use crafts to unwind but I still get a real sense of achievement when I finish an item from scratch and a friend or family member wants to take it home with them.”– Trish

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I taught Textiles at the local secondary school for over 30 years and my love of embroidery and decoration dominates all my craft work. I work small and like my items to be practical but fun as well. It’s good to laugh so I try to incorporate some fun in my pieces.

Picture 211

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

I knitted some realistic looking cacti for the last Fairy Tale Fair and they were very popular. I think it was the fun element of expecting sharp prickles and finding soft mohair or angora wool instead.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I use it to unwind but I still get a real sense of achievement when I finish an item from scratch and a friend or family member wants to take it home with them.

Picture 212

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?
Only the Fairy Fairs and this will be my second.

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

For Mums – Patchwork pin cushions, Embroidered needle cases, Angora knitted brooches, Embroidered abstract fabric brooches, Book worms and Knitted cacti.
For Easter – Embroidered egg pin cushions, Easter fairy peg dolls, Easter felt animal brooches and hanging embroidered fabric decorations.

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

Oh yes! So many craft minded people in the same place at the same time with tea and cakes on hand. What is not too like?

Picture 213

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I hope to continue making craft items that people like, expand and try new ideas – maybe learn how to crochet after 40 plus years of knitting!

Meet Trish this Saturday the 9th March from 10.30am at The Fairy Tale Fair, Patcham Methodist Church, Brighton.

Our summer fair

Do you have a bestseller?
We sold out of all of our cakes and other treats at the last two fairs so it’s very hard to say what was our absolute bestseller as everything went so quickly! However, our lemon drizzle cake is always very popular – the key to a good lemon drizzle is getting lots of lovely zesty lemon flavour into the cake to balance the sweetness of the sponge and the homemade sausage rolls received really good feedback.

You took part in our previous two fairs, did you enjoy them?
The last two fairs were fabulous fun – so many good quality, talented craft stalls run by some wonderful people. As soon as the doors opened, the fairs were jammed full of visitors having a great time.

What treats can we expect from you in our spring vintage tearoom?
We have lots of yummy treats planned for the vintage tearoom in Spring – all of our food is homemade with really good quality ingredients. There will be the usual delicious cakes including carrot cake, coffee cake, apple cake, victoria sponge and also cupcakes, Easter cookies, hotcross buns and then some savoury items such as sausage rolls and pasties filled with a spicy chickpea, tomato and spinach mix.

Say Hello To…Unbreakable Hearts

Today we introduce Angela, from Unbreakable Hearts, she creates fun and colourful coasters, paperweights and more! Perfect Mother’s day gifts, so find out more about her…

“I love that I can get lost in my own world of colours, pens, paintbrushes and glue and just PLAY! I also love doing bespoke orders because I can create something out of other peoples images and thoughts; it’s like translating their ideas into another form.”– Angela

 Picture 187

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

My name is Angela and I love making things! I have always been involved within the performing and visual arts and never feel quite whole unless I’m involved in something creative…I paint primarily and illustrate.
My Unbreakable Hearts are a collection which I began after experimenting with various materials to create something hand made and practical. I was searching for a durable beauty. They are all hand drawn/painted and decorated using a variety of methods.

How would you describe your style?

Colourful, fun, cheeky, playful, experimental and honest.

Picture 188

How long have you been making your craft items?

The Unbreakable Hearts were ‘born’ about two years ago. The idea came after a friend broke up with her boyfriend and at the time I was drawing on a pieces of perspex and I thought how wonderful if hearts could be as unbreakable as perspex. Hence the name and the obsession with hearts!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My naughty coasters and paperweights which feature lacy and racy underwear have proven to be quite popular and enjoyed by men and women!

Picture 189

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

That I can get lost in my own world of colours, pens, paintbrushes and glue and just PLAY! I also love doing bespoke orders because I can create something out of other peoples images and thoughts; it’s like translating their ideas into another form.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have had a stall in several other markets: The Brunswick Craft Fair, Art Junky and the Brighton Craft Fair. I was also part of a great exhibition/event at the Basement called “Hydrobloom” which was organised by a couple of very talented lasses. I’m very excited to take part in the Fairy Tale Fair though because it was the first fair I visited when I moved to Brighton 6 months ago!

Picture 190

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

Coasters, paperweights and magnets galore! They are all different sizes and styles so there is something for everyone and their pocket! I will also have some one off Mothers Day illustrations.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I want every household to have at least ONE unbreakable heart!

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I’m Fliss, I live & work in Hove, & regularly attend craft fairs. I make jewellery and especially like working with glass and ceramic beads. I’ve been focusing on making colourful memory wire bracelets & silver earrings in a range of styles. I also make mosaics using broken pieces of tile; I love ceramics and especially rustic colourful & patterned tiles. As well as my own designs, I love making custom pieces (such as pictures, house numbers, jewellery boxes)

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

I’ve made some little silver earrings using ceramic star shaped beads, with Chinese designs of flowers & leaves on them. These were popular Christmas presents!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

As my business name suggests, I’ve always been quite a magpie, so an excuse to collect shiny & colourful things is great in itself! Combining them to make jewellery other people enjoy wearing it a great feeling. & with the mosaics, there’s something very satisfying about smashing up tiles, and piecing them back together like a puzzle!

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I’ve been to a few different craft fairs in Brighton. Crescent Studio, where I make my mosaics, has an Open House coming up in May.

You will be providing a workshop for The Fairy Tale Fair- what will your workshop involve?

I will be running a workshop making memory wire bracelets. Adults & children are welcome to come & make a bracelet, I’ll be on hand to help. A perfect little pressie for Mothers Day?! I will have a range of beads with me, in lots of colours and materials.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’d like to have more time for my jewellery and mosaics, & ideally work a bit less & craft more! It would be great to get my mosaics into Brighton shops, and to get stuck into some large projects!

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am a Make-up Artist and Hairstylist based in Brighton offering a full range of make-up and hair services including vintage styling.

What do you enjoy most about being a Make-up Artist?

I like the variety and the fact that no person is the same. It’s always exciting to interpret what the customer wants and see them smile when they look in the mirror. I also love problem solving on customers such as those who suffer with redness or rosacea etc. It’s always a nice feeling when you can show them that they can have the make-up they want and feel confident.

You took part in our Christmas Fairy Tale Fair- did you enjoy it?

Yes I did, it was so much fun! I can’t believe how many people came along especially considering how grotty the weather was. There was a lovely atmosphere there on the day and I loved the variety of different stallholders who were there. Everyone who attended looked very chuffed with the fair.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

It’s been a great achievement establishing a name for myself as a vintage styling expert over the past 6 years and I am pleased to have been one of the first, if not the first, to bring vintage styling to Brighton many moons ago! Going forward, a natural progression for me eventually will be going into teaching new stylists as I mentor a few new stylists now. I am excited to see what the future holds for The Beauty Artist!
