Say Hello to… Shiny Pigeon

Today we are super exited to welcome back the lovely Rebecca of Shiny Pigeon, she was very popular at our last fair and we’ll sure she will be again!…

Tell us/ remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hello! I’m Rebecca and I create whimsical woodland creatures and gifts from fabric, felt and yarn. I work out of the back bedroom of our Nest, normally with our woof, Chekhov laid around my feet and my husband on a very important conference call on the desk next to mine. My creations are inspired by the books I read as a child and I hope to invoke the nostalgia of Enid Blyton, Kenneth Grahame and Richard Adams for the young…or at least the young at heart.

How long have you been making your craft items?

I can’t remember a time I wasn’t making something, I am quite lucky to have been encouraged to ‘be quiet and find something to do’ from an early age. I taught myself to crochet around 3 years ago and I have been sewing since I was allowed to use a needle. I opened the digital doors of The Pigeon’s Nest in 2012 as an outlet for my creativity, and I haven’t looked back.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

This year, my rabbits have really done well…. I think I have a certain Christmas ad from John Lewis to thank for that. They make fabulous gifts for children and newborns too…I love getting bunny snuggle photos!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love to respond to what customers want. I’ve added so many new colour ways recently after getting commissions and then falling in love with the result! The biggest head over heels moment I have had recently has to be for my bunny in a lemon yellow, requested by a customer. I want to make a whole warren full of those beauties!

Will you have some special Spring time Easter creations for sale?

For spring and summer my Love Birds shed their Christmassy colours for pastels and there are chicks galore! Of course, my rabbits will be making an appearance….what is Easter without the Easter bunny?

1013757_699446390087195_1865966161_n

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I am very excited to be part of Cowpie this year. Having moved from Dorking, it will now be held at Blue Anchor Farm in Lingfield on the 11th of May. Looks like it should be a brilliant day for all the family!

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I have so many plans for The Pigeon’s Nest! I have recently put some of my makes into a lovely brick and mortar shop in Horsham, and this year I hope to find another lovely little boutique, perhaps in Brighton who would stock me too.

Describe what Easter means to you in 5 words or less:

Spring has finally sprung. HOORAY!

1902910_700077453357422_1005229578_n

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

I honestly had SO much fun at the last Fairy Tale Fair. I was quite poorly and was slurping Lemsips under my table, but that didn’t put a dampener on my day at all! Everyone was so friendly (and SUPER talented!) and it really felt like a buzzing community of fabulous makers. It was a great way to spend my Saturday!

Any other comments you wish to make:

The Pigeon’s Nest has made the leap on to Etsy, and I am very pleased we have. Not all my wonderful things are listed yet, but I am just very pleased to be part of such a wonderful online community…. You can find me at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ThePigeonsNestUK .

I can’t wait to be back at The Fairy Tale Fair! 😀

Say a Festive Hello To…Show Me Shiny Things

Today we are pleased to welcome back fliss of Show Me Shiny Things, who you can find in our workshop room, surrounded by lots of lovely beads!! Find out more…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hi, I’m Fliss. I live in Hove and I work in mental health services. I’m studying to hopefully be a psychotherapist one day. I like to entertain myself with yoga, skating by the sea, and making jewellery and accessories… it gives me a great excuse to collect lots and lots of shiny things!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.22

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been making jewellery for just over a year now.  I was inspired to have a go after a friend made me a memory wire bracelet.  It was a great way to make use of my half forgotten collection of beads!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

Necklaces are my best sellers; the silver chain with the little ‘two birds on a branch’ pendant and my newer range of coloured glass pendants on black lace.  For Christmas I’ve been making some special festive earrings and giant pins, with snowflakes, holly and candy cane silver charms. I’m also adding a collection of shiny things for boys, so perfect stocking fillers for everybody!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.30

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love seeing my range of jewellery getting bigger and better, and designing the craft fair displays. It’s great fun to set it up and show lots of people what I’ve been making.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

Yes, during this past year I’ve attended a few craft fairs in Brighton & Hove (Brighton Craft Fair, Brighton Craft Alliance), Worthing (Bartie’s Boutique) & London (Brighton Belle’s at Old Spitalfields Market). I’ve also had jewellery on display at the lovely ‘Sunshine Books, Art & Coffee’ cafe on Hove Street since the May Open Houses. This will be my third Fairy Tale Fair, very excited!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.38

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’m planning to do some work on photography and online sales in 2014. I want to set up my etsy shop, keep working on my facebook page and I would love to get some items on ‘not on the high street’. As well as continuing to get to craft fairs and markets!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Lots of new shiny things!!

Any other comments you wish to make:

It’s always excellent fun being part of the Fairy Tale Fair, and especially running the jewellery workshop making bracelets with kids. None of this would be possible without Claire’s hard work, so a big thank you! Here’s to a magical fairy tale Christmas fair!!

A Festive Welcome Back to….. Pomelo Crafts

We are excited to welcome back Pomelo Crafts, again another Fairy Tale Fair regular, and Patcham based too! We love Lynn’s wonderful sewn creations, especially the cute little purses and i-pad cases!…

Remind us about you and what you create?

I’m Lynn and I live in Brighton with my family. I love making useful creations in the form of different types of bags and purses – make-up bags, toiletry bags, phone sleeves, glasses cases, coin purses, kindle cases, iPad sleeves.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.42.36

Will you be selling some special festive creations?

Not as such, but all my creations make great Christmas presents. I’ll have some fabric gift bags with me and they really are a nice way to present smaller gifts.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

Yes, The Fairy Tale Fair is the first one of the season, but I’m also taking part in the BIG Brighton Christmas Fair at the Sallis Benney Theatre on 8th Dec and I’m excited about the Jessie Jumbles Marvellous Christmas Market in Billingshurst on 14th Dec. I’ll also be taking part in an Open House over the weekend of 8/9 Dec.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.42.44

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to take part in all of The Fairy Tale Fairs and they’ve all been amazing. There’s such a lovely atmosphere and it brings a bit of glam to Patcham (I actually live in Patcham).

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.42.53

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

Just to carry on doing what I’m doing. I started Pomelo Crafts because I love sewing and that’s how I want to keep it. I’m still determined to open an Etsy shop though!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Controlled festive chaos! (wow, managed that in 3)

A Festive Welcome Back to….. Georgie Arts

Today we welcome back Tina of Georgie Arts, who has been with us since The Fairy Tale Fair began! We look forward to welcoming her and her wonderful embroidered creations back! find out more…

Remind us about you and what you create?

Georgie Arts is home to all things embroidered and embellished.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.25.33

Will you be selling some special festive creations?

Our festive offering is packed with a variety of Christmas specials from festive scented fairies , ornaments and little books to beautifully embroidered greetings cards and tags to embellish your gifts. We shall also be bringing some of our established favourites.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

We will also be at Barties Big Fab Christmas Boutique (co-organsied by The Fairy Tale Fair for one day only!) at St Paul’s Art Centre in Worthing on Sat. December 7th.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.25.42

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

We’ve always had a fairy filled ball with the Fairy Tale Fair.  It’s such a friendly event, with a fantastic range of high quality crafted items providing something for everyone. The temptation is to shop away all the day’s profits. Thank goodness Christmas provides an excellent excuse to get all our friends and family locally hand crafted gifts.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.25.51

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future?

Or have you already achieved them?  To expand the space time continuum to allow for more stitching and crafting time- so much to stitch… so little time…    Seriously, since my stitching knowledge has always been far superior to my scientific I will just continue to enjoy every opportunity to both expand my skill and practice it.

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 14.26.00

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Happiness frosted with glitter.

Any other comments you wish to make:

We’d like to wish everyone a very peaceful and merry Christmas.

Say hello to…… Caleigh-ill

Today we welcome another Fairy Tale Fair newbie, which we are super excited about- Caleigh-ill! We LOVE her creations and we think you will too! Find out more about her and her wonderful creations…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I’m Caleigh Illerbrun (aka Caleigh-ill…). I’m originally from Canada, having moved over to the UK 6 years ago. And I do a lot of drawing/painting.. which I put onto various products. I also paint custom things, such as my ‘Russian Owls’.

Screen shot 2013-10-30 at 17.08.22

How long have you been making your craft items?

I have been creating and making for all my life but only started to sell my creations properly upon being inspired by all the lovely crafty-ness going on in Brighton.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

By far my best selling is the ‘A Chase’ design on coasters. They are a limited edition of 50 sets total and I am quickly nearing the end of their run. View here.

I don’t normally do festive items, but this year I’m hoping to get some holiday gift tags featuring the ‘Nakkid Owls’ http://www.caleigh-ill.com/nakkidowls.html

Screen shot 2013-10-30 at 17.08.33

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy the process of creating the most. I feel that I would always be creating something no matter what, even if I did not have an outlet to sell my products through and even if my creations never saw the light of day.
I also enjoy seeing people’s reactions to my work at markets and fairs.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have done other markets in other cities, but Brighton is by far my favorite. The community of crafters and customers is the best of anywhere I’ve been.

My website has all my confirmed upcoming Markets this Christmas: http://www.caleigh-ill.com/

Screen shot 2013-10-30 at 17.08.43

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’m happy with the place I’m at right now with my artwork and products; there is of course always room for growth and I’d love to be in a position to not need a full time job.

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Delicious food with family.

481818_427242920701747_124667045_n

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

I love doing the Fairy tale Fair, the atmosphere is always great and I have met some lovely people.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I went part time this September, which allows me to spend more time making things. So far on my day off I have been making festive bits and pieces and I have to say it is a great way to spend a day. It would be lovely to do this full-time but at the moment I really enjoy teaching Science, especially in such a challenging environment.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

Only one – The Craft Central Christmas Fair in Clerkenwell, London at the end of November. But our goods are always available on line at Not on the High Street (just search for TheBigForest) and in Brighton at the stupendous and ridiculously wonderful Wigwam Toys in Preston Drove.

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

We took part in the very first Fairy Tale Fair (we knew you before you were famous!) and we loved it. It was good to see such high quality work by other makers and the cakes and tea were damn special too.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future?

It’s been a wonderful year for TheBigForest. We were interviewed about our work and influences by Made in Felt magazine (it’s by the same publishers as Mollie Makes), our work has been featured in magazines in the UK and Scandinavia and we have begun to expand our network of wholesale outlets.  We have also made a lot of commissions for adults and kids rooms too, these are real bags under our eyes and distinguished grey hairs I’ll have you know.

In 2014 we will be expanding our business,  developing our lecturing and teaching work, working with new retailers, building our on-line selling and continuing to create goods our loyal (and new) customers love!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Family; Love; Forests; Stolen; Woodburner.

Any other comments you wish to make:

Come to The Fairy Tale Fair! It will be one of the most inspiring fairs this Christmas and everyone loves handmade festive gifts.
