Say Hello To…The Cotton Elephant

We first met The Cotton Elephant at our first Fairy Tale Fair, she returned for Christmas and we are lucky enough to have her back again for Spring too! Find out more…

“I would like to live in a cottage, with a herd of micro-pigs and some chickens and spend my time split between my sewing room and my allotment! In the meantime though, I’m quite happy to just spend a few hours a week with a needle and thread.”– Siobhan, The Cotton Elephant.

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am the Cotton Elephant and I make gifts, home wares and pretty things from fabric. There’s no theme to my creations as such; they’re just whatever pops into my head. I particularly enjoy making patchwork quilts for babies, but I also like making smaller items such as cushions and decorations (including, of course, little Cotton Elephants). For the next Fairy Tale Fair I am working on a new range of Mothers’ day gifts including jewellery wraps and purses, which I will be selling alongside some old favourites such as my beach-hut door stops and applique cushions.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My personalized baby blankets have been selling really well this year (something to do with the baby boom I think!) and that’s great because I get lovely pictures sent to me of super-cute babies enjoying tummy time on my creations! Items from my seaside range also sell well; I have sold some of my beach-huts as far as the USA.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I have a busy and quite demanding day job which involves me spending most of my time in front of a computer. I really love being able to unwind in front of the sewing machine, or sitting with a cuppa and hand-sewing the final touches to a new creation. Sewing gives me the chance to be creative, which I wouldn’t really have otherwise.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have done two other Fairy Tale Fairs – they’re absolutely brilliant! I hope to do more fairs this year.

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I’m making a range of products with some fab new silk fabric I have found; purses, make up bags and jewellery wraps which will make lovely gifts for mums. I’m also selling a range of smaller items which will make lovely little gifts.

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

I loved it! Meeting so many other crafters and lovely members of the public was absolutely great. It was also really festive – and I LOVE Christmas!

I would like to live in a cottage, with a herd of micro-pigs and some chickens and spend my time split between my sewing room and my allotment! In the meantime though, I’m quite happy to just spend a few hours a week with a needle and thread.

‘I loved the last Fairy Tale Fair! It was great to meet so many crafty people…’- Siobhan, The Cotton Elephant

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am Siobhan, also know as The Cotton Elephant. I make cotton goodies: homeware, gifts and baby blankets. My handmade products include my sea side range (beach hut door stops, canvases and cushions), personalised playmats and blankets, and home decor items.

What festive gifts and creations will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I’m going to be selling Christmas decorations and Christmas bunting, alongside gifts such as make up bags. Of course, I’ll also be selling my sea side range, baby blankets and decorative items. I’ll also be taking commissions for blankets and playmats for anyone who is looking for a really special gift.

You took part in our last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it and did you find your creations were popular with visitors?

I loved the last Fairy Tale Fair! It was great to meet so many crafty people. My lavender hearts and elephants were my most popular creation.

Will you be taking part in other events over the festive period (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I will! I am taking part in one other fair in the run up to Christmas and I’ll be working away like an elf making all my Christmas orders. Each blanket takes me around 12 hours to make, so around a full time job, I’ll be pretty busy!

Any other comments you wish to make:

I still have a few spaces left in my Christmas order book. If you’d like to order a commission please get in touch!

Say Hello To…The Cotton Elephant

This is The Cotton Elephant’s first craft fair and we think their creations are going to be very popular! Find out more about her below…

“A bit vintage, a bit shabby. A little bit quirky and eclectic; but completely happy and smiley.”– The Cotton Elephant

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I am Siobhan from lovely, sunny Hove. I make anything and everything that I can from cotton; baby blankets and play mats, home decorations, soft furnishings and gifts.

How would you describe your style?

A bit vintage, a bit shabby. A little bit quirky and eclectic; but completely happy and smiley.

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been sewing for years, but only in the last 18 months have I started selling my items and taking commissions.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My baby blankets are my best selling items – they make fantastic, personal gifts for little people. My beach hut door stops are also proving popular; I’ve even sold some to America!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love spending time with my radio, a cup of tea and my sewing machine. Making my cotton creations is the way I like to relax. I get so much satisfaction when vague ideas in my brain turn to reality.

Do you take part in other craft events?

The Fairy Tale Fair will be my first fair (the first of many I hope!).

What products/ items will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling a variety of my products including: gift items (eye masks, scented hearts), baby blankets and play-mats, soft furnishings (cushions and quilts) and home decorations (hanging decorations, door stops and bunting).

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

Long term, my goal is to live in a cottage with chickens and a herd of micro pigs, spending my days sewing and listening to radio 2. In the meantime, I am very happy living in my little flat in Hove and sewing in my spare time.

Any other comments you wish to make

You can see examples of my work at www.facebook.com/thecottonelephant. Get in touch if you would like to know more.

We are excited that The Fairy Tale Fair will be The Cotton Elephants debut fair- we are sure it will be the first of many! Take a look at the facebook page via the link above to see all the latest from The Cotton Elephant.
