Say a Festive Hello To…Show Me Shiny Things

Today we are pleased to welcome back fliss of Show Me Shiny Things, who you can find in our workshop room, surrounded by lots of lovely beads!! Find out more…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hi, I’m Fliss. I live in Hove and I work in mental health services. I’m studying to hopefully be a psychotherapist one day. I like to entertain myself with yoga, skating by the sea, and making jewellery and accessories… it gives me a great excuse to collect lots and lots of shiny things!

How long have you been making your craft items?

I’ve been making jewellery for just over a year now.  I was inspired to have a go after a friend made me a memory wire bracelet.  It was a great way to make use of my half forgotten collection of beads!

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

Necklaces are my best sellers; the silver chain with the little ‘two birds on a branch’ pendant and my newer range of coloured glass pendants on black lace.  For Christmas I’ve been making some special festive earrings and giant pins, with snowflakes, holly and candy cane silver charms. I’m also adding a collection of shiny things for boys, so perfect stocking fillers for everybody!

Screen shot 2013-11-06 at 15.09.30

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love seeing my range of jewellery getting bigger and better, and designing the craft fair displays. It’s great fun to set it up and show lots of people what I’ve been making.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

Yes, during this past year I’ve attended a few craft fairs in Brighton & Hove (Brighton Craft Fair, Brighton Craft Alliance), Worthing (Bartie’s Boutique) & London (Brighton Belle’s at Old Spitalfields Market). I’ve also had jewellery on display at the lovely ‘Sunshine Books, Art & Coffee’ cafe on Hove Street since the May Open Houses. This will be my third Fairy Tale Fair, very excited!

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’m planning to do some work on photography and online sales in 2014. I want to set up my etsy shop, keep working on my facebook page and I would love to get some items on ‘not on the high street’. As well as continuing to get to craft fairs and markets!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Lots of new shiny things!!

Any other comments you wish to make:

It’s always excellent fun being part of the Fairy Tale Fair, and especially running the jewellery workshop making bracelets with kids. None of this would be possible without Claire’s hard work, so a big thank you! Here’s to a magical fairy tale Christmas fair!!

Say Hello to… Pomelo Crafts

Today we catch up with Lynn of Pomelo crafts who has taken part in all of our Fairy Tale Fairs. Find out more about her lovely creations…

Picture 143

Hello, I’m Lynn from Pomelo Crafts. I live in Brighton with my family and sewing is my favourite thing to do in my spare time. I love to make different types of bags and purses – make-up bags, toiletry bags, coin purses, phone cases, kindle cases, iPad sleeves…… and this is exactly the type of items I will be bringing with me to the Fairy Tale Fair.

Picture 144

I have a serious addiction to fabric and this is my way to fund the habit! I love mixing and matching different material together to make unique items which are also very useful. Pretty much everything I make is born out of a personal need so all the different products are tried and tested…. (although I’m still waiting for someone to buy me an iPad so I can make a pretty case for it).

Picture 145

I’ve taken part in all 3 Fairy Tale Fairs and I have absolutely loved them all. There’s such a lovely atmosphere and so many wonderful things to see and do. My daughter LOVES it and is always one of the first in the queue to get her face painted. I can’t wait!

We hear so many great comments about her face painting- often ‘the best face painting we’ve ever seen’! She usually has a que all day so arrive with plenty of time, take a ticket, then have a browse of the craft stalls while you wait!

Say Hello To…Polka Dot Cloud

Today we welcome back George of Polka Dot Cloud. We love her quirky, colourful characters! Find out more…

“The Fairy Tale Fair was such a lovely experience, everyone is so friendly and what is particularly nice is that everyone share the same love and passion for craft and making, its simply a wonderful experience to share that with others…”– George, Polka Dot Cloud

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

My names George, I teach Fashion, textiles and costume during the day, and make magical characters in the evenings, Polka Dot Cloud was created from an accumulation of daydreams and make believe stories. The characters are quirky and celebrate their usual naive appearances. Made up from remnants of fabrics, I like to think of them supporting sustainability within the land of fabrics as well…

564681_253763018078266_1337951663_n

How would you describe your style?

Quirky, odd, magical, whimsical, make-believe coming to life with a huge imagination.

How long have you been making your craft items?

About a year and a half properly now, I began when my little girl ruby was first born, but went into teaching so that kind of got slightly railroaded with paperwork! But now the dust has settled a bit, I’ve had more time to give my little make believe land the time and attention it deserves!

216762_348756998578867_1328362442_n

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

The lollipop heads are quite popular, Bunny and the peculiar creatures are very popular and Cecil and Cecilia the story telling cats {finger puppets} have grown to be very popular amongst mini people with huge imaginations!

156554_348789861908914_1261098360_n

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I love being able to create the ideas that op into my head, since my MA , my style of creativity always veered here and there and everything in everyday life intrigued and inspired me. But it has matured well and been fine-tuned. I find the most exhilarating elements for me, are sketching the idea, creating the character in 2D designs, and then bringing them to life. Pattern cutting as an absolute first love for me, so this is an aspect I really enjoy about my creative process.

523486_348757108578856_310512513_n

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc.…)?

I do local fetes and fairs at Ruby’s school, and Makers Boutique, I also do stalls at The Sallis Benny theatre in Brighton Uni and art Junky

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

Oooh I have so many plans, they are scribbled down in sketchbooks and notebooks scattered all over my house! My main plans for the future are to really grow Polka Dot cloud with lots of love and inspiration form everyday life, I have some big plans and developments that are being worked on at the moment in time for Autumn and Christmas, but they are still at prototype stage, so I won’t jinx myself just yet!

483523_348790071908893_743325785_n

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

Yes I have and yes I certainly did! It was such a lovely experience, everyone is so friendly and what is particularly nice is that everyone share the same love and passion for craft and making, its simply a wonderful experience to share that with others. The face painting was incredible as well; my only regret was not having time to get my face painted!

Say Hello to…Show Me Shiny Things

Today we welcome back Fliss from Show Me Shiny Things, who will be in charge of a bead jewellery workshop for us- which was very popular at our spring fair! Find out more about her…
“I really loved the last fair, it was an excellent day.  The hall looked great with the decorations, live music playing and all the beautiful handmade goodies to buy.” – Fliss, Show Me Shiny Things
Please introduce yourself and remind what you create…
Hi, I’m Fliss, maker of show me shiny things – jewellery.  I use silver, glass and ceramic, in a range of beads and charms.   My jewellery is modern, bright and, well, shiny! I will be bringing to the fair necklaces, bracelets, earrings and safety pin style brooches.

Picture 10
How long have you been making your creations and how did you get into it?
This is my first year of making jewellery, although I have enjoyed bead work since GCSE textiles.  Fortunately, my magpie collecting habits meant that I had quite a collection of beads when I started making bracelets in 2012.  A friend gave me a bracelet she had made and I thought I would have a go (so big thanks to her!)

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
The best thing about making jewellery is seeing people wearing and enjoying something that I have made.  Excellent feeling!  Also, it does give me an excuse to collect lots and lots of shiny things…!
Picture 8
You will be taking part in a craft workshop at The Fairy Tale Fair- what will yours involve?
My workshop will be making wrap-around beaded bracelets.  I’ve added to my collection of beads since the last fair so there will be lots to select from.  I will have some of my bracelets there for ideas, although last time there was no shortage of creative designs!
Picture 6
You took part in our Spring Fairy Tale Fair- did you enjoy it?
I really loved the last fair, it was an excellent day.  The hall looked great with the decorations, live music playing and all the beautiful handmade goodies to buy.  Not to mention the cakes..!  It was great fun holding the workshop and I’m really looking forward to doing it again this time.

Say Hello To… Karen Rao Felt Artist

Today we welcome back the lovely Karen Rao and her super and very popular felt making workshop! She took part in our Christmas and Spring fairs and the workshops saw those of all ages take part all day! Don’t miss it! Find out more about Karen…

“I really love showing people the wet felting process and seeing their fascination as their pile of wool transforms into a felted work of art.”– Karen Rao

Please introduce yourself and remind what you create…

I am a Felt Artist who creates hand felted wall art and accessories, from doggy eared hats to dainty corsages, felted pebbles to cheeky monkey wall art for kids. My source of inspiration is constantly evolving with new surprises always in store! Look out for my Summer Ice Lolly Collection!

Picture 12

How long have you been felt making and how did you get into it?

I created my first wall hanging five years ago. After stumbling across felt making at a children’s art day in The Brighton Museum, I was inspired. I needed a picture for my living room. I created one with my kids, then made another one and another …..
I take part in Craft Fairs and hold workshops at events, schools and privately, so hopefully I too, am helping to inspire all ages new to felt making.

Picture 14

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

Felt is so versatile. This medium is perfect for creating the highly tactile and vivid coloured qualities that I love. Further texture can be created by blending plant and animal fibres during the wet felting stage and also after this by needle felting. I can create two dimensional and three dimensional art. The uses of felt are endless, it means I am constantly learning and experimenting …. and changing direction.

Picture 13

You will be taking part in a craft workshop at The Fairy Tale Fair- what will yours involve?

Mouthwatering Lolly Art! We will be wet felting our own Ice Lollies and Ice Cream Cones inspired by the Great British Summer! This involves using just wool, soap and water to create our very own works of art!

Picture 15

You took part in our Spring Fairy Tale Fair- did you enjoy it?

I really love showing people the wet felting process and seeing their fascination as their pile of wool transforms into a felted work of art. It’s also very relaxing and therapeutic – no rushing around at this table! At other fairs now people often come up and say they’ve taken part in one of my Fairy Tale Workshops!

Say Hello To…Pomelo Crafts

We first met Pomelo Crafts at our last Fairy Tale Fair, and we are lucky enough to have her and her wonderful, yet useful, creations back again.

“I absolutely love shopping for different fabrics and mixing and matching them together.” – Lynn, Pomelo Crafts

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….
I’m Lynn and I live in Brighton will my husband and 2 little girls. My mum gave me her old sewing machine years ago so I used to dabble every now and again, but I started sewing more often a couple of years ago when I was on maternity leave. I started making things that I needed myself, then started making bits for friends and other people and it just spiraled from there. Now, I make lots of things from the lovely material I find – purses, kindle cases, iPad sleeves, phone cases, dribble bibs, fabric gifts bags. All very useful!

Picture 108

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

It seems to change, but my coin purses are always popular.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I absolutely love shopping for different fabrics and mixing and matching them together. I also only sew in my spare time as I have a different day job, so it’s just nice to get a bit creative in the evenings when the kids are in bed.

Pomelo Crafts Brighton

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I did several over Christmas last year and hope to do a few more local ones this summer.

What items and Mother’s day/ Easter gifts will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I’ve made a few make-up bags recently which would make a great Mother’s Day present. I’ve also got some fabric gift bags which would make a very pretty present filled with something nice – toiletries, cosmetics, chocolates. I’ll be bringing coin purses, iPad sleeves, kindle cases, dribble bibs, pencil case and phone cases too.

Pomelo Crafts Coin Purse

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

Yes, I loved it! There was such a lovely atmosphere and I met some great people. Sparkles Face Painting is always popular with my daughter as well.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I keep saying I will set up an Etsy shop which I really hope to do this year. It would also be nice to take part in some more fairs in and around Brighton.

Say Hello To…Karen Rao Felt Artist

Karen took part in a workshop at our last Fairy Tale Fair and we are lucky enough to have her back again, find out more…

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….
I am a felt artist creating unique animal inspired wall art, cosy floppy eared hats, pretty floral corsages, felted pebbles and a host of other hand felted goodies!

felt art

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?
My Red Rose Brooches are popular throughout the year but my Husky Hats have been selling well. I have a range of hats inspired by the wonderful dogs I meet on my daily dog walks!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
Felt is so versatile. It’s uses and techniques are endless. I use soft Merino Wool but add different wool fibres to create added texture and depth. I experiment with Alpaca, Camel and Yak wool, plant fibres but also manmade fibres. Recycled plastic bottle create the brightest white, curly soft fibres. My source of inspiration within nature is constantly changing and my work is forever evolving. I love passing on my knowledge about this fantastic medium in the form of workshops so that it can be can enjoyed by all ages.

Picture 86
Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?
I regularly take part in the monthly Makers Boutique and will be exhibiting with them at the Brighton Fishing Quarter through March to May. During the Artists Open Houses you can find my work at The Trojan House. After a successful workshop at the Brighton Mini Maker Faire, I will be holding another one at the Brighton Science Festival. I also hold felt making workshops in schools too!

Picture 87
You will be providing a workshop for The Fairy Tale Fair- what will your workshop involve?
Keeping with the theme of Spring, I will be holding a ‘Felt a Spring Chicken’ Workshop. Here you can create a mini art in the form of a cute fluffy chick (or your favourite animal of course) I will be teaching the ancient wet felting technique using just wool, soap and water! Add a little rubbing and rolling to create your own hand felted work of art to take home. Suitable for all ages.

You took part in our Christmas Fairy Tale Fair- did you enjoy it?
I held a ‘Felt a Brighton Rock’ workshop where we hand felted pebbles. It was great to see people’s fascination with felt making and what you can do with it. Seeing all the wonderful stall holders with their unique work was inspiring too in a super venue with a really friendly atmosphere.

Picture 88

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?
I am constantly working on new ideas. Even in a year the nature of my work has changed direction. I am experimenting with hand felting brimmed hats, so hopefully I’ll be able to work to commission soon. I love teaching too, so plenty of workshops to participate in would be fantastic!

Any other comments you wish to make:
I’m looking forward to seeing all the inspiring stall holders in a super venue with a really friendly atmosphere.
