Say Hello To… Noelle Vaughn

Please introduce yourself…
I’m Noelle Vaughn, a vintage singer and Jazz Chanteuse specialising in jazz standards and vintage classics from the 1940’s – 1960’s. I also have my own vintage radio show on Ridge Radio, every Monday evening from 9-11pm on www.ridgeradio.co.uk.
Have you been singing for a long time?
Ever since I was little, but I remember being 7 or 8 when I started singing to vintage music.
What do you enjoy most about it?
It’s hard to put into words – I adore music and come from a very musical household. I grew up surrounded by it, so it’s part of my life and I enjoy singing because music is so moving. But I can honestly say that one of the things I enjoy most about it is the pleasure it gives others; that is so touching.
What are your plans/ ambitions for the future, or have you already achieved them?
So far, 2013 has been fantastic – I have performed at some amazing venues, met brilliant people along the way, and just released my album, Bewitched. I am looking forward to seeing what 2014 holds!
Are you looking forward to singing at The Fairy Tale Fair on Saturday?
Very much so, and so are many others who have said they’ll be coming along! The tea room sounds lovely!

A Festive Welcome Back to….. Bets & Bobs

A big welcome back to Emma of Bets & Bobs, who joined us in summer and we look forward to having again! We love her funny vintage themed cards, prints and creations. Find out more about them…

Remind us about you and what you create?

I’m Sussex born and bred, with a love of typography and silly words. I like putting them together to make people laugh, whether it’s a greeting card or stenciling over old sheet music.

Will you be selling some special festive creations?

Yes! I have lots of Christmas decoration designs I will be busy making over the next few weeks in the run up to the fair! I also have new ‘Brighton up your day” jars that are crafty little kits for kids (or adults!). Some of them will be to create festive decorations and they make perfect stocking fillers.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

I’m quite busy in the run up to Christmas now, so you can find me at the Makers Boutique at the Unitarian Church on 23rd November and 21st December, Craftaganza at Fabrica on Saturday 7th December and Johnny Loves June in Shoreham on Sunday 8th.  I like a variety so I get to meet lots of interesting people – fellow designer makers and customers.

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

I absolutely loved it! Such a nice vibe and lots of kiddies around enjoying the fun too. I was quite jealous of their amazing face paints so I might have to get something festive at the next one. A lovely bunch of designer makers and a really busy and fun day.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

After the Christmas season I’m planning to focus on improving my Etsy shop a lot and also preparing for the next wedding season, attending some wedding fairs to showcase my cards, handmade favours and event styling experience!

Say a Festive Hello To…Retro Violet

Remind us about you and what you create?

My love of the twenties fashion and culture first inspired me to make the original Polite Friends Rings. Since then my inspiration comes from many different fashion eras and I’m always working on expanding the collection. I also make a Sugar Violet range, specifically designed with children in mind.

Picture 473

Will you be selling some special festive creations?

For the first time I have a Christmas range which includes a Santa bell necklace, Lucky Angel bracelet, Snowman hairclips and Tree decorations.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

Yes, there are quite a few gems: Pop-Up Vintage Fair, Johnny Loves June Vintage Fair and Jesse Jumbles Marvelous Christmas Market.

Picture 474

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

Yes, it was amazing and spectacular. So many talented people under one roof! It truly was magical, there was a great atmosphere with a creative workshop room, a tearoom and a clown making funny shaped bracelets out of balloons!  I met some really lovely customers and stallholders, and even won a prize in the raffle.

Picture 475

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I’d like Retro Violet to keep growing, last year I was just doing stalls but this year I also have a pop-up shop in Gorgeous Gerties, Dorking. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Next year I’m hoping to develop my online shop too.

Will you be taking part in any other fairs over the Christmas period?

Yes, I will also be selling at the “We Made This” market on the 21st of December in the Friends Meeting House in Brighton.

You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?

Say hello to….Yellow Bear Wares

We look forward to welcoming Fairy Tale Fair newbie Claire of Yellow Bear Wares, who you will find in our workshop room. Find out more about her wonderful quirky vintage knitting needle jewellery….

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Hello! my name is Claire, I design and make jewellery for my Etsy store Yellow Bear Wares. I’ve always been a maker but I am reasonably new to the world of ‘crafting to sell’ and so far I am really enjoying myself, I’m very excited to be a part of the Fairy Tale fair on November 16th.

I create my jewellery using vintage and second hand plastic knitting needles. I design and make rings, bracelets, necklaces and I have just launched a new design of mine- knitting needle earrings!

They are the perfect gift to buy for a yarn lover, knitter, crochet fan, crafter or someone that appreciates the upcycled and quirky idea of jewellery made from knitting needles!

How long have you been making your craft items?

I started making knitting needle bracelets for friends and for myself a few years ago and then last year I decided to make some for my parents stall ‘One Bright Spark’ that they take to markets in the South West of England.

The process of making them for my parents enabled me to realise how much I missed the ‘hands on’ making part of my life as it had started to fade away what with work and life!

I really enjoy the whole method, from rummaging through boot sales and charity shops to find my needles through to the challenge of experimenting and designing my items and having the final pieces ready to photograph and sell (or to add to my own jewellery box!). My Etsy shop has been open since February this year.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

My rings have proved to be very popular at the few craft fairs I have done, I think it’s a combination of the bright and funky colours and the idea of it’s previous life as a crafting implement that excites people.

At The Fairy Tale Fair on the 16th of November I will be adding a new line to my stall: ‘EXTREME KNITTING NEEDLES!’ These are giant wooden knitting needles which are 61cm long that have been hand-made by my father. I will be running workshops alongside my stall giving you a chance to try knitting with these monsters. I will also have pairs of the needles available for purchase if you like what you have experienced or if you want the perfect Christmas gift for the knitter in your life!

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

Designing and making! I love trying to think up new design ideas and literally noodleing about with my needles! When inspiration hits me I really enjoy trying to create the vision I have had, sometimes I am pleasantly surprised and it’s the mistakes that make the best results.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have a few fairs lined up in the run up towards Christmas. I’m excited to be doing Craftaganza for a weekend (30th November/1st December), Art Junky at the Phoenix for the first time on December the 14th, and also ‘We Made This’ on December 21st for those late gift buyers! It’s my first year doing the Christmas run so I’m currently trying to figure out just how much stock I’ll need and focusing on creating a display for my new designs.

I’ve just had some very exciting news that I will be participating in an open house in May next year, this will be a completely new experience for me and I’m looking forward to it already!

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I hope to develop and expand my Yellow Bear Wares activities, I’m thinking about opening an online Folksy store to help my UK sales base to grow. I have some new design ideas, which are a bit different to my current products but would fit the ‘knitting’ theme and I am hoping to get them out of my brain and into reality in the not too distant future!

Sum up what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less!:

Family, indulgence, loved ones, excitement, sparkle.

Say hello to..Lilylou mosaics

Today we welcome a fair newbie- Lynn with her wonderful mosaic creations, find out more about her…

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

I have been making decorative Mosaic Hearts, mosaic Birds and Trinket boxes as well as Mosaic pots.

How long have you been making your craft items?

About 3 years

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it? And do you have some special festive items planned to sell?

My Hearts are my bestsellers, especially the ones using broken plates, the birds are also popular for hanging in the Garden. I will be doing some mirrored Snowflakes and Christmas trees for the Christmas fare.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I have always loved “playing “ around with Mosaics and adding bits here and there and creating unusual pieces, if I had the time I would do it all day long !! I find from cutting the pieces of tile to finishing off at the end very enjoyable, therapeutic and rewarding !!

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have taken part in a local Church craft fare which was great.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

To carry on enjoying what I do and hopefully carry on with the Fairytale fair!!

Say a Festive Hello To…Rosehip

Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about how Rosehip began…

Hello! We are two vintage-loving cooks and crafters, Emily Wade and Wendy Bell, and we both live in Lewes. We met through our young children being at the same nursery. One day while chatting in a cafe over tea and chocolate brownies it became clear that we both share a passion for food, flowers and styling. One thing (well, brownie) led to another (brownie) and from there we decided to create a bespoke vintage catering and event styling company together.

Picture 495

What do you enjoy most about Rosehip?

We relish every opportunity to be creative and dynamic. Our different styles of working are complementary and bring further dynamism to an already highly creative process. All of what we do is creative and that is what we love!

Picture 496

What is your most popular cake or yummy treat?
One of our most popular cakes is our 6-layered ombre cake with homemade passion fruit jam and white chocolate ganache frosting and for treats look no further than our melt in the mouth macarons!
Can we find you at any other events over the festive season?

Yes! We will be at the Christmas Vintage Fair at Middle Farm – 23rd & 24th November, and the Artists and Makers fair in Lewes on 30th November, where we will be selling our homemade iced Christmas biscuits, homemade crafts and vintage wares.

Before all that we’ll be running a pop up cafe as part of ‘Carnivale Creative’ at the Lewes Town Hall on Thursday 5th December. Doors open at 5pm, as this is the Lewes’ Late Night shopping evening. Some vintage circus-themed delights we are planning include rainbow confetti cake and candyfloss topped cupcakes, as well as—of course!—moustache cookies on sticks. As well as the cafe there’ll be live music, stalls and various other acts. Another fun date for the diary!

We really look forward to seeing you at the Fairy Tale Fair; come over and try out our Pomegranate jewel cake (gluten free) or a slice of Italian chocolate and nut Christmas cake with whipped cream, or maybe a slice of Lime and pistachio cake (also gluten free). Or if you feel like something savoury, how about our hand-raised turkey, bacon and apricot pie or maybe our pea, tarragon and cream cheese pithivier. There will be plenty more on offer too.

Describe what Christmas is to you in 5 words or less:

Celebrate all that you treasure!

This is your first fairy tale fair, are you looking forward to it?

We are delighted to be part of the Fairy Tale Fair, do pop along and see us. We promise to delight your taste buds and provide you an enchanting festive experience.

Say Hello To…Cat a Cake Creations

Today we say hello to Claire of Cat-a-Cake Creations, who is also our fair organsier! Claire creates whimsical themed laser cut jewellery, greeting cards and accessories which fit perfectly with the fairs theme…

“Visitors to our fair seem to stay for hours, looking at the wonderful crafts, eating yummy cake, listening to our vintage singers, helping their children take part in a workshop, getting their faces painted and much more- it really was a magical day!”– Claire

Picture 172

Remind us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

As well as organising this fair and working full time at a design studio, I also regularly sell at craft markets across Sussex. I sell a range of whimsical & animal themed laser cut jewellery, greetings cards, pocket mirrors, badges, cotton bags and more! All of my work is hand designed by myself. I started designing the laser cut jewellery just over a year ago and since then it has had great feedback and features!

cat-a-cake creations jewellery

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My ‘Buddy the Cat’ necklace is always popular. He is based on my own pet Buddy the cat, who is a big fluffy black cat who likes lots of cuddles! The best thing about having him as a necklace is he can be any colour I want him to be! Other than Buddy then my earrings are always popular- at two pairs for £8 they are very good value and come in various cute animals, colours and all have silver plated findings and come in a little pouch to keep them warm! During the summer my ice cream necklaces from my new Carousel collection have also been popular- The Fairy Tale Fair will be my last fair of the summer months so get one quick before they melt!

pink cat necklace

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy translating a design that starts in my head, to a sketch, then to a visual, then to a piece of jewellery, then selling it, seeing peoples reactions and hearing their feedback on it is always good. It’s a great feeling to see someone wearing a piece of your jewellery- its nice to know that it is appreciated. I recently sold an item from my Etsy shop to a lady in America, so Dot the Dalmatian necklace was wrapped up and sent off to sunny Florida- alright for some! I think Etsy is great to get your work known further afield and its a great feeling knowing a little item you had an idea about is now sitting as a lovely necklace in a house half way around the world! Dot the dalmatian will also be available at the fair!

Picture 244

Do you take part in other craft events and exhibitions?

Yes, lots! As well as The Fairy Tale Fair I also take part in Brighton Craftaganza, Makers Boutique and two Artists Open Houses as part of Brighton Festival in May and December each year.

Excitingly my jewellery was also part of the catwalk collection at High Street Fashion Week in London in April this year which got great feedback and lots of features on fashion blogs. I also managed to speak to Charlotte Church at Brighton fashion week, and she wore my silver bird earrings for the event, which she was photographed in the Daily Mail the next day.

cat a cake creations

I also have lots of events booked for Autumn and Christmas already- including Belle’s Vintage wedding fair- which will be my first wedding fair which I am very much looking forward to, Pop Up Vintage in Hassocks- again this will be my first vintage fair so looking forward to that too, and starting to book up for Christmas fairs too! Better get my festive hat on!

What items and summer creations will you be selling at The Fairy Tale Fair?

I will be selling pieces from my new Carousel collection- including ice creams, doughnuts, seagulls, cake, teddy bears, carousel horses and more- all hand designed and laser cut locally. As well as my usual favorites- Buddy the cat, Nigel the sausage dog, my earrings in various animals, badges, pocket mirrors and more! Lots of little bits for kids and nice gifts for presents or just a treat for yourself!

Picture 175

You took part in the last Fairy Tale Fair, did you enjoy it?

Yes I took part, and organised it!  It was great to see it all come together on the day and see the happy faces of the children and customers who visited! It takes a lot of work to get the crowd in we did- thousands of flyers through doors, adverts, lots of posts on this blog, keeping up with social accounts, sending emails, contacting press and much more- but I think it is all worth it in the end. Visitors seem to stay for hours, looking at the wonderful crafts, eating yummy cake, listening to our vintage singers, helping their children take part in a workshop, getting their faces painted and much more- it really was a magical day! I hope this Summer fair that marks our first Birthday will be just as magical, we have so much to offer and come such a long way in a year, so please don’t miss it!

Picture 173

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I hope to continue to organise The Fairy Tale Fair, and help it grow. I have plans to make it bigger and expand, but I’d always like to keep its local roots as it has a real community feel! I’d also like to organise more events, such as charity events, weddings and other fairs/ markets across Sussex.

Picture 174

I’d also like to continue to develop my design career and one day aim to have my own greeting card range and exhibit at a big trade show in London. I also have a keen interest in Children’s books. For my final project when I was at university I created a book of nursery rhymes- I’d like to continue to develop this and one day write my own children’s book too! Oh and I’d like to own a cute little cake and craft shop in Brighton by the seaside- everything would sparkle and be lovely!

Bring out the Bunting!

We love our bunting here at The Fairy Tale Fair! We can’t wait to show off the beautiful bunting by bunting boutique, which will decorate our fair once again!

Bunting Boutique's bunting at our spring fair

Bunting Boutique’s bunting at our spring fair

Here are a few words from Sue, owner of Bunting Boutique:

“Down on the Sunny South Coast, tucked away on a side street a mere stones-throw from the beach resides Bunting Boutique, makers of the most exquisite handmade one-off pieces of bunting.

Picture 193

In our Aladdins cave of a studio, surrounded by a myriad of fabrics, tools, nic-nacs and trinkets, we lovingly construct strand upon strand of bunting, the colour and fabric of every single piece carefully considered, every stitch laboured over.

Picture 192

Our vintage ranges are little works of art in their own right, and with materials sourced from all four corners of the globe (well, Sussex anyway!) you can guarantee that every bundle is totally unique.

Picture 195

By incorporating things like a crocheted doily, a gorgeous trim detail, or an area of hand embroidery, every piece has it’s own story, it’s own history, and we hope, a wonderful future!

If you’re looking for something specific, something more personal perhaps, then please click here to read more about the many bespoke services we can provide.

Picture 194

We can hand embroider letters onto linen to create words or phrases of your choice, or we can design and make Bunting to your specification.

Picture 196

You can choose the patterns, fabric and colour scheme of your choice to guarantee it fits perfectly wherever it ends up hanging.

Picture 198

If you have a special piece of vintage linen which is sentimental to you and would like to see it transformed into a lovely garland, we will gladly help you to realise this. So head over to our Bespoke page for more details.
