How long have you been making your craft items?

I have been publishing cards for 2 years.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

My balloons Little Tweets card is a best seller along with all of my Mischief designs particularly my Pocahontas girl, what makes this so special is that it is an illustration of my daughter.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

Bringing an idea for a range to life and then seeing peoples genuine joy when they see them.

Will you have some special Spring time Easter creations for sale?

I will have a really cute easter card this year of a bunny with a spectacular Easter bonnet!

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have just taken part in the We Made This fair in Lewes which was great and this year will be at my first Open House on Montpelier Road, Brighton.

2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 32,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 12 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?
I enjoy making each item individual. Almost all my designs are one of a kind so I see them all as having their own character. As I’m using recycled materials I work with what I have to hand so I get most excited about collecting and finding used materials that have interesting colours and patterns that I can work with.

We took part in the very first Fairy Tale Fair (we knew you before you were famous!) and we loved it. It was good to see such high quality work by other makers and the cakes and tea were damn special too.

It’s been a wonderful year for TheBigForest. We were interviewed about our work and influences by Made in Felt magazine (it’s by the same publishers as Mollie Makes), our work has been featured in magazines in the UK and Scandinavia and we have begun to expand our network of wholesale outlets.  We have also made a lot of commissions for adults and kids rooms too, these are real bags under our eyes and distinguished grey hairs I’ll have you know.

In 2014 we will be expanding our business,  developing our lecturing and teaching work, working with new retailers, building our on-line selling and continuing to create goods our loyal (and new) customers love!

2 days to go!! RSPCA Brighton Raffle!

Incase you aren’t aware we are holding a very special charity raffle for the RSPCA Brighton who will be in attendance for our fair. The shelter is based in Patcham, not far from our venue so we felt that they were very fitting to choose for our charity.

They do such great work in looking after and rescuing the animals across Sussex. We visited their centre open day in Patcham at the end of July- which was great- lots of stalls raising lots of money from the centre. They also had the centre open to see the animals. Whilst it was lovely to see the work that they do, and how clean and well maintained the centre was it was still a little sad to see so many animals in need of a home.

The RSPCA needs help in order to keep the centre going day to day, so we are going to do what we can to raise lots of money on the day for them.

Our raffle will feature high quality products generously donated by our stall holders- so this will not be your average jumble sale raffle! High quality prizes, with the money going to a great cause!

Here are just a small selection of the prizes that will be kindly donated by our stall holders. All of these prizes have been made by our stall holders and we thank them for their time and generous donations…

Say Hello to… Pomelo Crafts

Today we catch up with Lynn of Pomelo crafts who has taken part in all of our Fairy Tale Fairs. Find out more about her lovely creations…

Picture 143

Hello, I’m Lynn from Pomelo Crafts. I live in Brighton with my family and sewing is my favourite thing to do in my spare time. I love to make different types of bags and purses – make-up bags, toiletry bags, coin purses, phone cases, kindle cases, iPad sleeves…… and this is exactly the type of items I will be bringing with me to the Fairy Tale Fair.

Picture 144

I have a serious addiction to fabric and this is my way to fund the habit! I love mixing and matching different material together to make unique items which are also very useful. Pretty much everything I make is born out of a personal need so all the different products are tried and tested…. (although I’m still waiting for someone to buy me an iPad so I can make a pretty case for it).

Picture 145

I’ve taken part in all 3 Fairy Tale Fairs and I have absolutely loved them all. There’s such a lovely atmosphere and so many wonderful things to see and do. My daughter LOVES it and is always one of the first in the queue to get her face painted. I can’t wait!

Say Hello To…Little Mouses

We look forward to welcoming Little Mouses and thier vintage themed creations back…

1003700_628173310534425_2068005548_n

“Little Mouses is a mixture of old and new pieces, handmade goods and vintage treats.
I make a selection of home-ware accessories including mini bunting, big bunting, cushions and lavender bags. I love old fabrics, linen, and lace and you will find all these things in my work.
Mini bunting has become our trademark and is certainly our best seller. A lot of people use it to decorate a dresser, a favourite mirror or just to pop in a card as a little gift.

We can’t wait for The Summer Fairy Tale Fair. We attended the Christmas one and there was a real buzz of creativity, and such talented stall holders.”

Say Hello To…Me and Mrs Jones

Today we meet another Fairy Tale Fair newbie Mary and Kassi- otherwise known as Me and Mrs Jones. They make some super cute crafty creations, so read on to find out more…

“You can take craft ANYWHERE! Mary won’t leave house without her crocheting. She often gets the bus and will get funny looks from people as she sits there. You can sit and sew whilst watching the TV- or dedicate a whole day to making a mess and not caring!”– Kassi

Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….

Me and Mrs Jones are mother and daughter who have been crafting for a very long time. Mary (Mrs Jones) taught Me (Kassi) all she knows, and together they make a variety of crafts from greetings cards, hair clips, bunting, sewed decorations/badges, crocheting and Kassi’s special scrabble pictures.

Picture 52

How would you describe your style?

Our styles are quite different. Whereas Mary is very traditional, with her crochet baby shawls for instance, and her gorgeous afghan blankets; Kassi seems to have a bit more of a modern twist to her crafts, as you will see from her scrabble pictures and bunting.

Picture 69

How long have you been making your craft items?

We have been making them forever! My fondest memories are my mum teaching how to do quilling, how to make patchwork cushions and how to make chocolate truffles. I really did grow up surrounded by crafts.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

I think the best seller has to be the baby blankets. They are the perfect gift for a new born, and they can be kept as the child’s “blankie” forever. Kassi still has hers! 😉

Picture 71

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

You can take craft ANYWHERE! Mary won’t leave house without her crocheting. She often gets the bus and will get funny looks from people as she sits there. You can sit and sew whilst watching the TV- or dedicate a whole day to making a mess and not caring!

Picture 66
Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

We have been to school fairs, and our local Christmas Market, but we have both been a bit bust lately- so are just getting back into the flor

Picture 70

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

The ideal dream would be to have our own little shop. A craft shop come tea room.
But for now, we are happy knowing people enjoy our hardwork.

Now… we just need to win the lottery.

Picture 50

We Love Bunting!

Oh yes we do! Especially that of Bunting Boutique! Bunting Boutique are a small company based in Brighton and will be supplying wonderful bunting to decorate our fair with. We used their bunting for our Christmas fair too and got such nice comments on how nice the venue looked!

Find out more about this wonderful company…

Picture 292

“Down on the Sunny South Coast, tucked away on a side street a mere stones-throw from the beach resides Bunting Boutique, makers of the most exquisite handmade one-off pieces of bunting….

Picture 291

In our Aladdins cave of a studio, surrounded by a myriad of fabrics, tools, nic-nacs and trinkets, we lovingly construct strand upon strand of bunting, the colour and fabric of every single piece carefully considered, every stitch laboured over.

Picture 290

Our vintage ranges are little works of art in their own right, and with materials sourced from all four corners of the globe (well, Sussex anyway!) you can guarantee that every bundle is totally unique.

Picture 289

By incorporating things like a crocheted doily, a gorgeous trim detail, or an area of hand embroidery, every piece has it’s own story, it’s own history, and we hope, a wonderful future!”
