Say Hello to…Ilona’s Kitschen

In the second of our Say Hello To… blog posts for our Christmas fair we introduce to you Ilona’s Kitschen. We first came across Ilona when she visited our last fair and was the Lucky winner of our Competition to win a Buddy the cat necklace! We are looking forward to having Ilona at The Fairy Tale Fair- especially as she will be providing a polymer clay workshop where you can learn to make your own festive clay creation- what a lovely gift idea! Read on to find out more…

How would you describe your style?

My style is inspired by kawaii, which is the Japanese quality of cuteness, (meaning adorable/lovable/cute). I generally make miniature versions of favourite foods, though have also made other items like characters from animations and memes all out of polymer clay.

How long have you been making your craft items?

I have been making food charms for a couple of years now, having started out making unique gifts for friends and family for Christmas. I work as a secondary school teacher and sometimes give away my creations as prizes for good work in class, which are much more covetable than sweets, which I used to use.

Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?

I make these macaroon phone charms that have ‘whipped cream’ in them and are adorned with sparkly cabochons, they always sell fast.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

It’s a really fun and rewarding way to unwind after work and I have met some very nice people as a result of attending craft fairs. It sounds cheesy, but the craft scene is pretty friendly.

Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?

I have taken part in the Brighton Mini Maker Faire, but am really still a novice.

You will be providing a workshop for The Fairy Tale Fair- what will your workshop involve?

I will be showing you how to make your own polymer clay cupcakes, which you can decorate with a festive theme and take home to finish off in the oven.

What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?

I am constantly torn between which path to take, should it be science or art? I do have a dream of opening a tea-rooms/art and craft/bookshop type place but I also love communicating science. Who knows?

Any other comments you wish to make:
I am really looking forward to taking part in The Fairy Tale Fair, the last one was really cool and had a really buzzing atmosphere. Add to that some festive cheer and I know it’s going to be truly magical!
